Anatole Lebreton - Incarnata

Incarnata which is the latest Anatole Lebreton creation starts with a very true, dry, dusty,  powdery, not so sweet lipsticknote, that sort of vintage lipstcknote, a scent I'm remember since childhood. Cosmetic notes is also the theme for this intriguing, retroinspired perfume. It has a putty lipstick texture but is not as violet-rosy as Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose or sweet and dirty as Etat Libre D'Orange Putain des Palaces. After a while, there is a note appearing which smells close to cummin, but not the sharp varity, this is sort of a smooth versio. There is also hints of something similar to cough syrup but in a positive way. As Incarnata dries down, a smell that resembling the image of the texture of a thick, transparent, cold fluid appears: A splendid, deep myrrh, not as dark as in Huitième Art Myrrhiad but also not as airy as in Serge Lutens La Myrrhe, here it's almost the myrrh from Guerlain Myrrhe et Delires. The result of the myhrr mingling with the powdery notes is brilliant; the cosmetic notes becomes enlighted and almost refreshing.

Incarnata is a suitable perfume for a evening out in the opera or in the theatre. It's sort of sophisticated, robust with hidden secrets, like an untidy apartment hiding behind the perfect facade of a buildning on a posh street. It's an intriguing perfume which shifts during its development and evokes different images. The sillage is medium and longevity is very good with clear traces remaining after 24h. To me Incarnata is a very feminine perfume.

Like the other Anatole Lebreton fragrances I have tested, Incaranta is intriguing, well made and stands out in the flood of niche releases. I would like to own a bottle of each and thankfully those fragrances are quite reasonable priced to be niche, 90 EUR/50 ml.

Mona di Orio - Myrrh Casati

Myrrh Casati is the first fragrance from nichehouse Mona di Orio created by another perfumer than Mona. After Monas untimely death in December 2011, the fragrances that was in line for release Rose Etoile de Hollande and Eau Absolue or the personal fragrance for Monas business partner Jeroen Oude Sogtoen Violette Fumeé, were launched. This difficult mission to compose the first non-Mona fragrance for the house of di Orio was given to perfumer Melanie Leroux. The new perfumes are launched in a subline called the Monogram Collection which also introduce new bottles and a new logotype for the Mona di Orio brand.

Myrrh Casati is inspired of the very wealthy eccentric italian early 20th century active Marchesa Luisa Casati, a musa for fashion and art. Myrrh is a timeless, dramatic and mysterious ingredient with ancient origins and therfore also maybe a tad eccentric.

Myrrh Casati starts transparent and in the higher octaves of the scale, a similar context as Serge Lutens beautiful La Myrrhe but with a slight spicy, smoky almost leathery addition. La Myrrhe is more of a pure myrrh perfume with the pronounced refreshing mushroomnote which lasts for a considerable time of the dry down, in Myrrh Casati the mushroomnotes last just for a while. In the middlenotes the licorice contribute to a sweet contrast to the very dry myrrhinterpretation of Myrrh Casati. There is also a smell of fresh loam and a quick glimpse of a drak green moisy moss and a quick passing note similar to pine needles. The licorienote is very well balanced and not as prominent as in Guerlain Myrrhe et Delires or Huiteme Art Myrrhiad. In the basenotes Myrrh Casati is deeper and the myrrh is surrounded by perfectly balanced spices, the cardamom and saffron are note detectable as separte notes, as also not the incense and patchouli. Everything is somehow perfectly balanced, restrained, elegant and wellbehaved.

To me Myrrh Casati is calming and soothing, not recalling one of the Marchesas wild parties. The darker, denser and heavier Huiteme Art Myrrhiad would be more suitable in this context IMO. Insted it's recalling the same as Serge Lutens La Myrrhe a medival stonechapel, cold a bit moisty and mossy stone, with traces of the smell of balmy incense, myrrh and soft spices in the air.

Even if not original or not particularly distinctive from the other myrrhs mentioned in the post, the soothing and in the same time elegant qualities makes Myrrh Casati very attractive and wearable for many occasions year around. It's undoubtedly appropriate in style to join the perfumes created by Mona. Sillage is close and longevity over night. Not that I'm a specialist in perfume construction but to me, Myrrh Casati is better balanced then both Myrrhe et Delires and Myrrhiad. Finally I perceive it Myrrh Casati as a more restrained alternative to La Myrrhe.

Guerlain - Myrrhe et Delires

Myrrhe & Delires is the latest creation in the Guerlain L'Art et Matiere-line. It's created by the current Guerlaan inhouse perfumer Thierry Wasser.

Myrrhe & Delires starts sort of resinous, fresh and airy. There is also an accord that reminds me of classical, oriental/chypre perfumes fleeting in and out in the basic structure of the perfume during the top and middlenotes. The classical accord reminds me of the typical chic "french" smell of Balenciaga Prelude and also hints of Quadrille from the same house. This typical french-chic note is also present in Balmain Ivoire vintage version even if the latter fragrance is green, aldehydic, flowery, soapy which is not the case with the former fragrances. Quite early in the dry down the to some myrrhe fragrances typical licorie note appears. In M&D this note is light and airy, contrasting to for example Huitieme Art Myrrhiad (in swedish), is dark, dense and mysterious compared to M&D. There is also a streak of the cold, dark, slight smoky accord of Juliette Has A Gun Calamity J. but tuned down and expressed in a softer and smoother way. The rest of the dry down is soft, sweet, resinous and retains the airy interpretation of licorie. To me the opening accords (as with most of the fragrances I have tried from the L'Art et Matiere-line )  are the most interesting part of the fragrance, but the linear dry down that follows later is beautiful, very comforting and easy to wear. To my nose there are some similarities between the composition of the base of Tonka Imperiale and Myrrhe & Delires as also with Cuir Beluga.

As Myrrhe & Delires is'nt overly sweet and almost airy in it's texture, the fragrance is wearable for both day and evning during the whole year, except for the warmest days in the summer. Sillage is close, longevity about 24h.

Those who likes Annick Goutal Myrrhe Ardente, Serge Lutens La Myrrhe (in swedish) and Mona di Orio Jabu (even if myrrhe in Jabu is just a supporting note) will probably enjoy Myrrhe & Delires too.

Parfumerie Générale - Djhenné

This year the house of Parfumerie Générale, founded by perfumer Pierre Guillaume, celebrating ten successful years with a fragrance that fills the vacant number 22 in the numberd collection, Djhenné. Maybe the number was left to unite the “2:s” of the founding year respective the year of Jubilee.

Djhenné is a town in Mali, famous for the big mosque constructed by clay in 1907. To me, Djhenné the perfume also smells as I can image the smell of the dry, hot, earth blended with some sand from Sahara mingled with spieces, cacao from the market, and some herbal green whiffs from the scores of the river nearby. According to an interview on Fragrantica Pierres inspiraton to Djhenné was “a fresh accord surrounded by hot sand. Oasis, a lazy hot atmosphere, and a little bit of freshness in a hot desert”

Djhenné starts with sparkling, almost spritzy light spicy notes that mingles with an uplifting green light flowery herbal note, probably the mint and flowers combined. The pepper from cedarwood comes forward in a quite early stage and after a while Djhenné reminds me of some sparkling woody-peppery fragrances for example the bolder L`Eau Guerriere which is bright and luminous but at the same time heavy in it’s notes and therefore has to be applied very sparingly. But after this short phase Djhenné turns to a softer, warmer spicy stage supported by some delicate and almost dry and powdery, sweet notes supported by an almost rounded, strawlike note which mingles and balances with a light resin-sweetness. The last accord is probably highlighten the original wheatnote and the myrrh, but a sort of stripped down, light myrrhm not the dark, warm myrrh of Myrrhiad from one of Pierres other perfumelines, Huitieme Art. In the Fragrantica interview the interviewer find similarties with another beautiful PG fragrance, Bois Naufrage. Even if not quite obvious to me, both have the same relaxing aura and Bois Naufrage is the wet woody version and Djhenné the warm, dry and spicy version of the theme

Except the short, cedar-pepper phase, Djhenné is a very relaxing fragrance with a comfortable dry, warm, light flowery, spicy and well balanced sweetness. It’s easy, but in the same time interesting, to wear as it repeatedly unfolds new discrete twists, especially in it’s later stages. The longevity, despite it’s perceived lightness, is 12h+. Djhenné is a fragrance that grows on me from the initial impression of a good but not especially distinctive fragrance, I can’t stop sniffing my wrists in the later stages of this beautiful and a bit mysterious fragrance that induces such exotic images to me, just as Pierres intention.

Djhenné is perfect for daytime wear year around, and as said above, a fragance for calming down .

Huitième Art - Myrrhiad

Myrrhiad är den i mitt tycke mest lyckade parfymen i Pierre Guillaumes "fånotsserie" Huitième Art. Kanske beror det på att den är ensam release i serien 2011 och därför fått mer tid i skapelseprocessen jämfört med de hela åtta dofter släpptes samtidigt när serien lanserades 2010.

Myrrhiad koncentrerar som namnet indikerar främst på den sedan urminnes tider i religion och doftsättning flitigt använda, söta kådan myrra. Som stödjande noter har Pierre lagt den av honom så ofta skickligt och originellt hanterade thenoten samt anis, läder och vanilj.

Myrrhiad lyckas i att lyfta fram den not som jag förknippar med myrra. Den är varm, tät, kådig och naturligt, mörkt honungssöt. Ingen sockrig sötma. Myrranoten är lika tydlig som i Serge Lutens fina La Myrrhe men den senare är jordigare, våtare och med den champinjonton som är typisk för myrra. I Myrrhiad är champinjontonen knappt märkbar och kompositionen är varmare och sötare. Annick Goutals Myrrhe Ardente är en något luftigare myrradominerd komposition där bivax/honung framhävs i myrranoten. I basen påminnner också Myrrhiad en del om Mona di Orios apelsinblommedominerade Jabu där en brödig myrra ger en behaglig, vilsam upplevelse. Vaniljen, the:et och anisroten kan bara lätt anas, anisroten adderar egentligen bara en rondör och fördjupar myrrans naturliga sötma. Vaniljen är ytterst diskret och thenoten känns mer som en bärare av doften, den som gör att Myrrhiad inte blir för kompakt och mörk. En not som tydligen också ingår i Myrrhiad är läder, men den noten detekterar inte min nos i kompositionen.

Myrrhiad passar utmärkt som juldoft, både för årstiden och den typ av dofter som är aktuella för julen och för den religiösa/historiska koppling som myrran har till högtiden. En doft med lagom projektion, alla Huitième Arts dofter är dofter som ligger nära bäraren och inte invaderar rummet, och mycket god hållbarhet ända in på kvällen. Perfekt att värma upp och koppla av i under den mörka och kalla årstiden.

Julklappstips i sista minuten

Late to the party! Både Pojkfröken och Parfymbloggen har redan klarat av detta tema med listningar på lämpliga dofter för olika kategorier nära och kära. Eftersom jag instämmer i mycket är det ingen mening att börja göra en lista här också men här några ytterligare tips:

* Ett väl beprövat tips är att vänta till presentförpackningarna säljs ut i mellandagsrean. Ofta är det 30-50 % och vill man inte kladda med tillhörande bodylotions etc så är medföljande produkt perfekt att ge bort. Själv har jag smått börjat fundera på presentförpackningen av Victor & Rolfs Flowerbomb.

*Såg i ett av de stora varuhusen en 15 ml flaska (minst) av DKNY Be Delicious dvs det ursprungliga gröna äpplet vilket "faktiskt" är en riktigt bra komposition, till ett pris av SEK 165. Överkomligt  om man vill komplettera sin doftgarderob med en klassiker som denna Granny Smith - kreation numera är.

* Vill man som Pojkfröken både riskminmera och slippa trängas på sta'n så hinner man ta en titt hos trevliga niche-webbshopen/butiken Fragrance & Art. För den som vill riska i det lilla så borde paktetet hinna fram till julafton då 3-5 dagars leveranstid anges.

* Kan trots allt (med risk för att få min objektivitet ifrågasatt) inte låta bli att hinta om några bra dofter från ovanstående sortiment då jag provat en del av dofterna under hösten:

- Azemour les Orangers (Parfum d'Empires): Tänka sig att det anno 2011, restriktioner och annan goja till trots, faktiskt går att göra en klassisk citrus chypre av 70-talssnitt tänk Chanel Cristalle EDT och Eau de Rochas. Men så har också Parfum d'Empires ägare, tillika husnäsa Marc-Antoine Corticchiato, förutom en doktorsgrad i kemi i botten också examen från absoluta toppparfymörskolan École Internationale de Parfumerie de Versailles (ISIPCA). Review här.

- Myrrhiad (Huitieme Art Parfums): Om än inte lika toppskolad, här är det vad jag vet "bara" kemistexamen i botten, men med en pappa som lyckligtvis innehar en kemifabrik där någon produktionslina kunde ställas om, så lyckas snyggingparfymören Pierre Guillaume med det mesta han tar sig för. Så även i mytiska myrra, svart the och lakritsbrygden Myrrhiad som förresten reviewas i morgon.

- Pepper/Poivre (Place des Lieces): En straight-forward peppar-kryddblandning som på mig faller ut i en frisk rökelsedoft, se review härom veckan.

* Både Pojkfröken och Julia nämner två Dior Homme versioner, Intense respektive Sport. Jag vill även lägga till den ordinarie Dior Homme samt skicka ut en varning: Enligt tillförlitliga källor i parfymbloggosfären är Dior Homme under reformulering och denna innebär att man tonar ned den häftiga läppstiftsaktiga irisnoten till förmån till mer trä dvs DH kommer att mer likna andra herrdofter :-( . Så DH-fantasten bör  för säkerhets skull dammsuga markanden efter äldre flaskor dvs hitta någon affär med lägre omsättningshastighet på produkten. Vet inte om man ändrat på förpackningen/flaskan vilket brukar vara tecknet på en lite större reformulering.

Nej nu måste jag göra något vettigt, som att dekantera prover till julklappar. Också ett sista minuten tips till julklapp från en parfymnörd till någon med ett spirande intresse.
