Etat Libre D'Orange - Rien

The name of Etat Libre D'Oranges Rien is an understatement to said at least. But that is on the other hand not surprising as it comes to this controventional perfumhouse, at least when it comes to the it's earlier releases. Rien is on of those earlier creations and it is executed by the famous Givaudan perfumer Antoine Lie. About the story behind and the perfumers inspiration of retro perfumes blended in a contemporary style and taken all the restrictions of rawmaterial in consideration that has ruined many of the great classics when reformulated, read the initiated review of Rien at Bois de Jasmin. Rien is one of these "complicated" cult fragrances, analyzed in almost it's every part in different parfumeblogs and forum and here is my version of it: The formula of Rien reviewed is the original, it's said to has been reworked to a softer version in 2014.

The perfume Rien is anything but "rien", instead it is very "très" as very much is going on in this blend. It starts by a very strong and almost overly harsh construction site note that I genreally like. But in Rien it's on the verge of being too much of that particular wet, putty, gritty and slight sweaty note. This note is also present but in a subtler and more pleasant way in Etros Messe de Minuit. There also a note of a tick, almost smokey and dry leather, as in a rough and heavy leather coat. As Rien is a very strong and potent blend one have to be very careful upon application. When sampling and wore a full sprits from the sample on the right arm and a half sprits on the left, I felt a difference in the scent. It smelled much better on the left, lower dose, hand, not as sharp and compact as on the right. But in the stronger concentration there on the other hand are some interesting animalic notes glimpse. As the first, strong blast tunes down, the fragrance turns into a pale pink almost withering rose backed up by a gentle cumminnote, musk and cold green whiffs that resembles geranium. This stage is slight powdery. The blend for a while gets even more dry to my nose and in this stage there is traces that reminds me of Aromatics Elixir by Clinique. But AE is a louder interpretation of the rose, geranium, moss and also distinguish the individual notes more apparently than in Rien, which notes seems to be more mixed together. In the basenotes there are also aimalic notes that is not as distinct in AE. There is an almost animalic furry note among the basenotes together with a distinct musknote and the powdery pale rose that remains subtle. In the middle and basenotes there are many similarities with the beautiful rose-musk combo in Musc Nomade by Annick Goutal and sometimes I'm almost thinking I'm wearing the latter even if MN is more refined and elegant in it's appearance. In the latest stage of the basenotes the rough leather from the earlier stages of Rien returns, but now it seems to be better in balance with the sourrunding notes than in the beginning.

Expect from the almost off-putting opening and topnotes of Rien, the perfume evokes just the right feeling of retroperfumes foremost in the leathery chypre style as Robert Piguet Bandit, Estee Lauder Azureé and Parfumes Grès Cabochard. But also as mentioned above, of a modern musky classic as Musc Nomade.

Rien is an interesting frag where a lot is going on during it's dry down and there is no risk of losing interest. Even the picky Mr Parfumista gives compliments when I wear Rien, which is strange as he often complians about strong aldehydic scents beeing too "old man/womanlike"on me. But Rien is dry, with almost no sweetness in it and Mr Parfumista is appreciating dry-wood perfumes for himself.  Rien is a must try for retro perfumelovers. I can't say it's officefriendly, not in it's initial stage anyway. This "offending" stage on the other hand dries down during the journy to work and when entering the office, the more pleasant middlenotes have appeared.

Parfums de Nicolaï – Musc Intense

Musc Intense is a sensual flowery, high quality white musk created by the great parfumer Patricia de Nicolaï for her own house, Parfumes de Nicolaï in 2012.

First of all I want to calm those readers down that don’t like the white musk performed in many of the reacent years mainstream offerings. Musc Intense is nothing of that characteristic almost wet slight chemichal note that could be too much in some offerings but that I like in many, if handled with care. Instead Musc Intense is all about a dry, powdery, luxary musk that integrating the flowers and other ingredients in a subtle manner.

Musc Intense starts with a pleasant, very dry almost gun powdery accord. It’s not the distinct wet gunpowder as in Lorenzo Villoresis Teint de Neige neither the less harsh but anyway close opening accord of the beautiful Temps d’Hiver by Antonio Visconti. But Musc Intense has similarities with both this fragrance openings but is lighter and smoother, just like an elegant loose powder on a powder puff. There is a lighter version of the typical gunpowderaccord of the two former ones,  which I think (just speculating I’m no chemist) consists of rose, carnation and maybe the musc or some other ingredient that could show powdery facetts. As Musc Intense reaches its heart, the powdery, subdued, flowery notes slightly reminds me of the beautiful powdery violet of Opardu by Puredistance. Some subdued liquery notes deepening the accord in a finetuned manner.At last, Musc Intense is anchored in a dry, powdery, not especially sweet musk and there is a deep but at the same time light, pink rosenote that emerges on my skin.

Musc Intense is a subtle and elegant fragrance, well blended of high quality ingredients as we are used to when it comes to creations of Patricia de Nicolaï. The only weakness is that it seems like my skin just eats Musc Intense and the scent therefore is faint to me, even if described as sensual and subtle it’s a bit too subtle to me. The longevity is for about a day and the sillage is very close.

To me Musc Intense is a scent as was it created exclusive for Madame de Pompadour.It’s the essence of the rococoera, delicate fabrics, pastels, powder and musk. Musk Intense is a fragrance for those who likes some of the fragrances mentioned above but also my own favorite musk Les Nombres d’Or Musc by Mona di Orio, also a slight flowery musk but more distinct and less powdery. Also Les Nombres d’Or Ambre by Mona di Orio has a similar drieness and some of the gunpowder of the opening.  If you like Les Nereides Musc Samarkand and Annick Goutal Musc Nomade you probably also will like Musc Intense.

Mona di Orio - Les Nombres d'Or Musc

Fortsätter med nästa pärla i Mona di Orios EDT-serie Les Nombres d'Or nämligen Musc. Les Nombres d'Or Musc är i mitt tycke ännu en fullträff från Mona, men jag verkar och andra sidan gilla det mesta som Mona skapar, hennes speciella stil berör. Till och med hennes "entonsserie" känns diskret och hemligt spännande. Precis om Les Nombres d'Or Ambre häromdagen är Musc klassad som unisex men jag tycker att båda dofterna är ytterst kvinnliga. Kanske det är därför flera manliga revieware inte verkar gilla dem.
Les Nombres d'Or Musc är för mig inte så mycket en myskparfym även om det är mysk som är det genomgående temat. Eller den mysknot som skapas genom att lägga samman noter från växtriket med syntetisk mysk, alltså ett substitut till den animaliska mysken. Musc har inte mycket som påminner om den typiskt mer distinkta, eller ska jag kalla den mer påträngande, "cleana" mysk som man kan känna i många vita myskdofter. Exempelvis Les Nereides Musc Samarkand och Annick Goutals Musc Nomade har ett tydligare myskigt inslag än Musc. Musc är för mig en mjuk puderpuffsdoft, heliotrope, tonkaböna och en lätt, blekt rosa ros är de noter som accentureras mest på mig. Musc är mycket komfortabel, diskret och elegant, den har inga kantiga, sträva eller dissonanta noter. En typisk "pärlcollier med kashmirkoftsset i blek pastell" doft, lika kvinnlig som Mona själv (även om hon är mer färgstark). Själv bara äääääälskar jag Musc, den får mig att känna mig så väl till mods, sin eleganta stil till trots.

Les Nombres d'Or Musc är, trots att den är en lätt, transparent och ljus doft, hållbar minst hela dagen.  Den passar dagtid året om och fungerar säkert ypperligt som kvällsdoft om sommaren.

Mysk(o) vecka...

Under en arbetsvecka har jag provat myskdominerade dofter i den lättare, ljusa till mellanljusa kategorin. Alltså inte tyngre bygder som min mörka amberettebaserade myskolja eller herr Parfumistas Oud Musk. Nedan några korta, spontana kommentarer.

Provningen inleddes med:

Les Nombres d'Or Musc (Mona di Orio): Som Mona O-fantast blev jag förstås förtjust i denna även om den inte når upp till Cuir i samma serie. Pudrig och varm mysk, troligen på grund av heliotropen och tonkabönan, elegant damig (på gränsen till tant enligt herr P), inget kemiskt tonårskatigt. En lätt blommighet av angelica och lite ros och neroli. En lätt floriental klassad som unisex men enligt min mening är den mer feminin och kan klassas som damdoft (om man nu bryr sig om sådant).

...och följdes av:

Musc Nomade (Annick Goutal): Påminner en hel del om Monas mysk men den här är helt unisex i sin karaktär. Träigare, mörkare och kallare trots vissa gemensamma ingredienser förutom ljus mysk extraherad från angelicarot, även amberette frön, tonka böna och labandum. Blommorna saknas här och doften känns kargare än Monas mysk på något vis.

Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDT (NR): En tillbakahållet blommig mysk som ger mig associationen varm bilklädesel i konstläder i en gammal amerikanare. En modern, träig, myskig oriental som inte skäms över sin kemiskhet. Det finns en lätt fruktig blommighet av osmanthus och apelsinblomma som balanserar mysken på ett bra sätt. Doften var stilbildande när den kom och den har fått flera efterföljare, mest känd är kanske Sarah Jessica Parkers Lovely som är en mer blommig variant.

Helmut Lang Woman EDP (HL): En mycket bra skalad ljus mysk som också var avantgarde när den kom 2000. Inleds med tillbakahållna vita blommor som jasmin och konvalj över en myskigt, träig bas kombinerad med en tydlig, varm vanilj. Diskret doft om den appliceras i lagom mängd. En perfekt svart/grå kostym/dräkt doft.

...och avslutades med...

Musc Samarkand (Les Nereides): Den ljusaste mysken sist. Den ger en fräsch men inte tonårskladdig känsla. På mig påminner den mig väldigt mycket om min version av Miss Dior EDT (ca tio år gammal version) även om den senare är grönare, stramare och skapare. När jag känner likheten förstår jag hur mycket Miss Dior förvanskats, en massa ljus mysk in och det mesta av ekmossan ut, även om jag tycker mycket om min version i alla fall. Där Miss Dior är effektivt kontorselegant är Musc Samarkand en vit, mjuk och ullig angorajumper att krypa in i en mulen dag. Jag tycker mycket om denna rena, enkla och okomplicerade doft. Svalkar även bra på sommaren.

Summering av den mysk(o) veckan: Mysk har fått en dålig klang på grund av alla likartat kemiskt fruktigt alternativt träigt myskiga dofter som vräks ut på marknaden. Men det finns många fina myskdominerade dofter och ser man till att applicera dem i lagom dos och ge dem tid för utvärdering så hittar man pärlor.
