Ricardo Ramos Perfumes de Autor - YouTubers' Series

Ricardo Ramos is a fashion designer  based in Granada, Spain. He is working on the evaluation and art direction of the brand collaborating with  perfumer Jorge Lee on the formulation side. A mission for the brand is to " making use of classic fragrance ingredients from the ancient kingdom of the Al Andalous to recreate a fused olfactory universe that blends the Middle East and Mediterranean traditions, with an aim to bring perfume enthusiasts closer to the cultural legacy of the Al Andalus kingdom, where European perfumery started in early Middle Ages". 

Aside from a wide ranges of perfumes in the regular collection, Ricardo Ramos Perfumes de Autor also have released some special editions and last spring I had the pleasure of winning a Fragrantica draw of a travelset of the three perfumeextraits in the The YouTubers' Series which was released in 2022. Thank you Ricardo for your generousity. 

The trio  is inspired by three YoutTubers, of whom I actually don't know anything. That could be an avantage, just to focus on the scents  when writing down one's impressions. As the fragrances are extraits, a little lasts for long one has to be careful, not overapplying.

Interstellar Moka: This is a very pleasant gourmand, with soft, rounded, fluffy, nutty, slight spicy, coca coffeeaccord . There is also something dark, thick, lurking underneath, this dark side has sort of a oily dark brown to black texture, but not an oily scent. Maybe this is the Interstellar, otherworld moment, the endless space. An advantage with Intersellar Moka, is that this gourmand is pleasant un -sweet, friendly and perfect for grey winterdays. Like warming in a fluffy, oversized, white mohairsweater.

BucanerO: A warm, sunny gourmand with tropical island wibes. A coconutty Tuberose glazed with booze, honey and tobacco is the focal point. The tuberose accord have something in common with Armani Prive Rouge Malachite  but BucanerO is thicker, rougher than the elegant Rouge Malachite, happy, casual and easygoing.  Compared to  Interstellar Moka, BucanerO is sweeter ,but the sweetness is not  overwhelming. The same spirit as Interstellar Moka but on the light, sunny happy side and just as the latter, perfect for grey winterdays.

Chypre Molecular:  My favourite of three, a very green, metallic, nuclear, contemporary chypre. Chypre Molecular starts with an accord resembling like green soapwater mixed the greenery of  bulbflowers, like hyachints that is just about to start rotting. In this stage Chypre Molecular reminds me of another green intriguing fragrance, BeauFort Fathom V. Not that they smell the same but somehow they mediate a similar mood where Fathom V is sort of rural, way darker and moisty as a mire compared to the urban  minimalistic bright greenery of Chypre Mocular. Even if the first accord is green, slight watery, it has some dry elements, it's the beginning of the dry, light spicyness of the perfume, an accord that's not present in Fathom V.

In the dry down a clean ozonic, clean metallic, mossy, light dry spicy accord occurs. In this stege Chypre Molecular reminds me of flying Concorde in the 90ies, the understated, clean cabin, the dim metallic glitter from the slim aircraft rushing in suprersonic speed almost on the border to space.

Chypre Molecular is a perfect fragrance for late winter and early spring, it's nuclear in proejction and longevity on skin, it has to be applied in maximum four spritzes to avoid an overdose.

Puredistance - Warszawa

Puredistance Warszawa is a collaboration with the Missala family who sells Puredistance in their perfumeries in Poland. The perfume (extrait with 25 % perfumeoil) is created by perfumer Anotine Lie and is a tribute to Warszaw and it's people, inspired of the golden era of Warszawa in the begining of the last century. Warszawa was originally launched in 2016 and was sold exclusivity by Quality Missala for a year. Now it's at last avaible for the rest of us lovers of vintage styled fragrances.

The colour of Warszawa the fragrance is said to be dark green with some gold and grey, and that's is also my first impression of the fragrance. It's starts like an elegant, glowing fruity chypre and it reminds me very much of a restrained, darker and smoother variation of Yves Saint Laurent Yvrersse (Champagne). Yvresse is higher on the fragrance notescale and more extrovert whereas Warszawa is gentler and intimate in character. Warszawa is also less sweet and more flowery than Yvresse, more green where Yvresse has more of the golden glimmer, or to be correct, Yvresse sparkles and Warszawa glimmers. Galbanum is distinctive in the first part of Warszawa and it's then present during the whole dry down. In the middle notes the flowery accord first brightens with a fruity touch which gives me associations to the lipstick-textured fruitiness of Cartier Baiser Fou but in a darker and refined context. In one wearing the fruitiness stands out, the other wearing the more intoxicated, elegant, flowery notes. Warszawa is a fragrance with many layers and interesting twists. Later in the dry down an almost balsamic texture appears, wrapping the wearer in a gentle and mysterious skinscent. The basenotes are deep and dark green, with strikes of a mysterious golden glow, like the remains of a campfire in the dept of a big forest a dark night in the autumn.Warszawas slight cosmetic touch, without beeing powdery or too lipsticky also reminds me of a night in the opera or theatre in the pre WW1 era. Dim light, elegant women in fur, velvet and silk in dark jewellery colours, glowing gemstones, feather decorations, powder and heavy perfumes.

Warszawa is a fragrance which has to be experienced in multiple wearings as new angles are appearing in each wearing. It's a fragrance for evenings around the year and for daytime wearing during the colder and darker months. The sillage is close, its a calm and quiet perfume, the longevity is for at least a day. A retro styled fragance in a contemporary interpretation.

Anatole Lebreton - L'Eau de Merzhin

Anatole Lebreton has founded his own fragrancehouse in his native part of France, Brittany. His perfumes are gathered under the slogan "Parfums de Liberté" and exudes a natural, carefree, sort of rual charm. Anatole is a collector of vintage perfumes, a perfume blogger and has also selling rare teas and fine chocolates.

L'Eau de Merzhin is the first composition of Anatole Lebreton and the initial accords of this green, slight dirty perfume are just amazing: Smelling like a well managed, well maintained horsestable with the smell from the horeses themselves, combined by a very true  haynote, all emphasized by a light flowery breeze blowing into the open door of the stable a warm summerday. In the middlenotes the animalic impression decreases and green, grassy, galbanum, leafy and light flowery notes dominates with hints of fresh, humid moss and  tangy green notes in the base.  L'Eau de Merzhin smells like a sunny summerday in the forest, the bewitched forest of Merlin. A fullbodied spring and summer fragrance which make me think of the older version of Pierre Balmain Vent Vert, Parfumerie Generale Papyrus de Ciane, and the two Parfums de Nicolaï: Le Temps d'une Fête (for the tangy, green, flowers) crossed with Vie de Chateau (for the breezy haynotes).

Even if it seems to be dedicated for spring and summer, L'Eau de Merzhin is a strong fragrance with a solid texture which also make it appropriate for colder months. It's longevity is very good, unfragmented traces are left on skin after 24h. Sillage is big. L'Eau de Merzhin is unisex but leaning a step to the feminine side IMO.

Olfactive Studio - Panorama

Panorama is the latest addition to the Olfactive Studio line. The green fragrance is inspired of the "urban jungle" and the amazing view from the famous Sheats Goldstein House, an extraordinary villa in Los Angeles. Panorama is created by perfumer Clement Gavarry.

Panorama starts green but not with the damp and moisty greeness that I associate with jungles. Instead it smells like some green Irish mist perfume, a cold, herbal, clover greeness, man cologne-ish in style. After a while Panorama gets warmer and spicier  and a gourmand note reminding me of the asian gourmand note in Neela Vermiere Creations Ashoka and also in  État Libre d'Orange Fils de Dieu du Riz et des Agrumes. Probably this is the wasabi note mantioned, but far away in strength compared to when eaten with sushi. There is also a light incense-pepper note lurking in the background and here there is something (minus some sweetness) that reminds me of Tauer Reveire du Jardin. After a while, cooler, fir-like,  greenery appears and once again Panorama feels very masculine. The basenotes is the most plesant part of Panorama, the blend has smoothing out, some almost flowery and earthy elements have joined the mix and suddenly I recognise an old acquaintance the rough and tough lady Balmain de Balmain which is much more distinct and interesting green blend compared to Panorama. Not much more is happening in Panorama, it's a safe linear, but quite different and a bit weird green blend which is almost refreshing in its apperance.

Panorama is good for summer, office friendly. with close sillage and longevity for a day. Even if a unisex fragrance, to me it's more masculine which I also think of Balmain de Balmain which is marketed as a ladys fragrance.

Parfum d'Empire - Corsica Furiosa

The latest addition to the highquality house Parfum d'Empire, Corsica Furiosa is a tribute to the ISCPA-trained perfumer and owner of the house Marie-Antoine Corticchiato native island Corsica. Corisca Furiosa, which features the mediterrian shrub lentisque, is an aromatic-green fragrance in its very own style , one hand dry, herbal, on the other green, leafy, crisp.

Corsica Furiosa starts with an accord which smells of dried herbs and gras over the sunbaked, hot, earth of a mountained, mediterrian island. There is also a note of smoke, as the smoke from a fire far away. A light spicy limenote is also present and is recognizable also in later stages of the fragrance. After a while a natural haynote appears and further in the dry down an almost animalic note, a pleasant furnote, appears. This stage reminds me of something in Musc Tonkin but softer and tuned down. In the basenotes a note clos to crisp, bulbflower leaves appears, probably the tomatoleaves but different handeled than in typical tomatoleave fragrances as Sisley Eau de Campagne and Joop! What about Adam. In this stage a light flowery element which reminds me of daffodil, enlighten this, taken as a whole, austere composition. This flowery note, the green note, the fur note and some of the hay with a slight herbal touch is what remains in the basenotes and lasts until the fragrance has dried down after 8-10 hours. There is also an element in Corsica Furiosa which reminds me of an accord in the base of Olivier Durbano Lapis Philosophorum.

Corsica Furiosa is gentle and close to the skin, it's light, almost as a cologne and could be re-applied during the day without any risk for overdoing it. It's a very casual fragrance but would also perform well in the workplace, especially in the scentfobic office. Corsica Furiosa is most intriguing in its first part, than its plesant and quite ok but with out the sensation of the first one third.

To me Corsica Furiosa is truly unisex but to be honest I think it wears better on me than on Mr Parfumista who tried it at first as I thought it would be more herbal bitter and masculine in style. Other fragrances which comes to my mind when testing Corsica Furiosa is Guerlain Cologne 68 which have some of the burnt, herbal mediterrian notes but is more flowery and sweet. The crispy bulbflower leaf is present in for example Pierre Balmain Vent Vert (older formula) and Oriza L .Legrand Deja le Printemps.

Fragrance(s) of the week (29) 2013 - Green &herbal

Here we are in the middle of the summer.Almost every year I have started long for the dark orientals of the autumn & winter by now but this year I'm more in tune whith the season and like to wear herbal and green perfumes such as:
 My SOTD Reverie au Jardin a bit neglected and forgotten Tauer.Green incense  lavandel herbal dry beauty, the always so wearable Cologne Friction from Parfums Nicolai, the salty, musky galbanum of Balmain Vent Vert (I appreciate the new version more and more) and the cotton clean galbanum of Coton Egyptien from Phaedon. Overall I like the unsweet and natural in style fragrances at the moment but theses preferences will probably change soon...

Pierre Balmain - Vent Vert (new vs older)

The first green fragrance (at least famous one) for woman Vent Vert originally created by one of the pioneer female noses, Germaine Cellier for Pierre Balmain 1947, is the epitome of spring and early summer. Leafy and grassy notes supported by the scent of bulbflowers creates a sunny and warm green fragrance, just as the feeling of the summer breeze a warm day at the countryside in the early summer. As all great classics, Vent Vert is reformulated severel times. The first major change was in 1990 conducted by another great female perfumer, Calice Becker. After that it has been some changes in the early 2000:s and most reacent, some years ago when Balmain repackaged in the current cube scaped bottles with the golfball cap, the current version was introduced.

Vent Vert starts with the sharp and a bit bitter green note of galbanum. In the older version the bitterness and greenness is much more pronounced and much more is going on. In the new version the galbanum is tuned down and a lemon note is evident. As Vent Vert dries down, in the new version, galbanum just wispers soft in the background when clearly preasent in the older version even if it takes a step back here also. In the new version an indistinct, a bit too sweet, floral heart appears and as it dries further down, it goes more and more soapy in character. The soapiness, even if a bit sweet, is fresh in the same time, image the smell of washing off in the sea after enjoying a woodheated sauna in the archipelago. The older Vent Vert on the other hand, is continuing in its characteristic manner, in the middle crispy flowers combined with a delicate spicyness takes the centerstage, underscored by the galbanum. Also when reaching the basenotes the older version has more character, more dept with its mossy and woody notes blended with some warm notes of amber and resins. The current version anchors in a bright and light woodiness which counterplays the sweet soapiness.

To summon up: The new Vent Vert is a bit tame, onedimensional and without dept compared with the older version. The older version is rougher, sharper and distinct in its grassy galbanum and leafy greeness balanced with the scent of the crispy flowers. The older version is the elegant, Hermèsscarf wearing, casual chic lady whereas the current version is classicalstyled, sporty teenager in a navy-striped  woolen Busnel sweater, jeans and Docksides. Even if i personally prefers the older version, I really think the new version should be considered by those who want's a new green scent for the coming, warmer season. The new Vent Vert is  better then most of the mainstream, floral stuff.

Vent Vert older version will attract those who like fragrances as Chanel No 19 especially in Edt, Annick Goutal Heure Exquise, Van Cleef & Arpèls First and Puredistance Antonia. I think the new Vent Vert will be appreciated by those who like Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte.

Ett olfactoriskt överfall

Härom veckan var vår avdelning på jobbet ute på försenad "julmiddag" en kväll. Ja, vi hade lite snärjigt innan jul så vi tog det en kväll i januari istället. Vilket i och för sig är bättre, det är ändå så mycket ätande kring jul.

Bord var bokat i city på en totalrenoverad italiensk restarurant som egentligen har funnits i decennier. Restauranten är belägen i anslutning till ett nytt hotell som finns i anrika lokaler som tidigare inrymt en stor och respektabel advokatfirma och under åttio- och tidigt nittiotal ett under den stora finanskrisen, konkursat återförsäkringsbolag.

Redan när jag klev in i hotellets lobby kände jag en vag, mycket lätt kemisk-blommig rumsdoft uppblandad med de lite nästan fuktiga noterna av nybyggt och nyrenoverat. Doften fanns också vagt i den kitschigt svart-guldigt, öststatsliknande baren och den följde även med ner i restauranten. När jag var och pudrade näsan uppnåddes doftcresendot och även kunskap om vilken den irriterat smygande doften var: På toan fanns nämligen enbart alternativet att tvätta sig med en flytande tvålversion av Byredos Blanche, en tvättmedelsliknande Clean-liknande komposition. Blanche hade så totalt tagit över luftrummet inne på toan och jag nästan börjar tro att det enbart var tvålen som parfymerade en hel restuarant, lobby och bar. Jag kände mest en otäck kemisk vitblomtvål blandning när jag frenetiskt skrubbade händerna mot ett antal pappershandukar. Blanche var då på väg att helt utplåna det lilla jag hade kvar av dagens testobjekt, Juliette Has A Guns Midnight Oud, för övrigt ett annat genomkommersiellt och urban-chic-ängsligt märke.

Måste ändå säga att Byredos ängsliga image "jag-är-en-medveten-livrädd-att-inte-vara-rätt- 30+ (men inte 40) -innerstadsbo-som-hajat-att-jag-måste-visa-mitt-estetiska-sinne-genom-att-ha-niche-parfym-men som-doftar-som-en-designerdoft-så-att-jag-inte-sticker-ut-FÖR-mycket" passar precis in i det lite kitschiga men samtidigt "halvung-innerstads-chic-möter-rubelmiljardär" miljö som hela det besökta hotell/restaurant-koncptet andas.

Byredo känns tyvärr så utstuderat genomkommersiellt att deras dofter nog inte alltid får en rättvis bedöming. Självfallet luktar deras dofter gott men för att generalisera ger de sig ut för att vara något de inte är - nyskapande och niche. Har bara doftat på några och inte provat (förutom Blanchetvålen då och Green på en annan restaurant där man nog bara hade tvålen för där blev det ingen doftchock) och jag skulle säkert kunna trivas till exempel i Palermo en dag när jag vill ha en enkel och okomplicerad doft. Självfallet vore det intressant att prova några Byredodofter, särskilt M/Mink som ska vara den som sticker ut mest, men inte så intressant att det är värt att kosta på att köpa prover.

Det är som sagt det att det känns som att hela konceptet är skapat för att kapitalisera på ängsliga urbana människor, bygga upp en rejäl omsättning, pricka in toppen och kränga av varumärket vid den tidpunkt (som säkert snart kommer) när LVMH och L'Oréal inser att de bör inkorporera ett storsäljande nichemärke i sin produktportfölj. Så jag kan beundra Ben Gorhams kommersiella förmåga att finna ett sätt att så pass snabbt kommersialisera på denna doftängslighet. Det är bara det att strategin är så uppenbar att jag förvånas över att så många sväljer konceptet. Det kan i och för sig även hävdas att märken som hålls högt av mig som Serge Lutens och Frederic Malle också är genomkommersiella koncept. Och visst är de, det är bara det att de fått fram så många intressanta och vissa till och med banbrytande dofter även om de självklart också blandar ut parfymlinjerna med mer kommersiellt gångbara skapelser. Som också brukar bli väldigt bra, ett exempel SL:s Bas de Soie.

Accord oud och Oud imortelle både i beskrivningen av själva dofterna och runtomkring, fångat mycket av det jag försöker sätta ord på i detta, för en del kanske lätt provocerande inlägg.
