Ramon Monegal - Hand in Hand

Picture: Skiers
Painting by Frits Thaulow (1847-1906)
WikiArt

Hand in Hand is an oud-oriental  inspired perfume from the Barcelona based perfumehouse Ramon Monegal. As usual the very experienced perfumer, the house of Myrurgia offspring, Ramon Monegal. As Myrurgia is mentioned as the Guerlain of Spain, Ramon could be likened to a spanish version of Patricia de Nicolaï. Both well educated and experienced in perfume/perfume business, running own perfume houses, independent from the old family houses which since long been sold to some of the big ones.

Hand in Hand starts cold, with a woody smell of juniper bush and pine in winter. After a while a smoky accord appears, it's the fresh, dry smell from dry wood, lighted to a campfire a cold and sunny winterday in the forest. This is not the rough,  masculine, meaty, smoky accord as in the campfiresmoke in Mona di Orio Les Nombres d'Or Cuir, the smoke in Hand in Hand is more refined. After a while a hint of leather ant a peppery note also shines through. The dark rose is  discrerte in the first stages of Hand in Hand. Over all the first part of Hand in Hand (even if not smelling the same) reminds me of the first part of Robert Piguet Oud, which also contains the cold, pine note. These two fragrances could be described as the ouds of the North, they are very suitable to the Scandinavian landscape and colder tempratures. Hand in Hand also has some kinship to Frapin Nevermore, as an unsweet, dry relative to that dark, dramatic, boozy, intriguing one. In the second part Hand in Hand becomes more spicy, a spicy mix which togheter with a musky base brings forward the rose a bit more, even if the rosy note not is as dominating as in most rose-oud combos. The rosy note is as integrated with the other notes. In the later stages of Hand in Hand I find similarites with the dark, purple, rose from Parfumerie Générale Isparta.

The cold, confier and smoke accords  is the first part of Hand in Hand I find the most interesting, the second part is more familiar for this style of fragrance. Hand in Hand could be worn year around at any occasion where a more intense pefume could be accepted. The fragrance is very concentrated, and just as with Isparta, it's hard to avoid overapplying. Less is more is definitly what is applicable in this case. Sillage is great and longevity for 24h+. Hand in Hand is unisex, leaning to the feminine side according to my nose.

Olivier Durbano - Black Tourmaline

Picture: Black Tourmaline by Olivier Durbano

This also applies to the pictures below
Black Tourmaline is another fascinating fragrance from the jewellery/perfumehouse Olivier Durbano. It's one of the earliest releases of the house and a part of the Bijoux de Pierres Pòemes which is fragrances inspired from different semi-precious stones.

Black Tourmaline starts heavy with a very  natural smelling tar-note. Soon Black Tourmaline smells like an Isle whisky, with its notes of tar and turf with a tad of smoke. The incense is interplaying well blended with the other notes. As Black Tourmaline dries down the tarry wood notes are softened by different dry spicy notes. There is also a hint of a quite rough leather but not as rough as in Mona di Orio Les Nombres d'Or Cuir which is the fragrance that I find most similar to Black Tourmaline, Cuir is almost a sort of turned up follower of  Black Tourmaline, even if Cuir also have the original smoky note that resembles grilled meat. Cuir is overall a stronger and heavier perfume. In the basenotes the dark and potent notes of Black Tourmaline are offsetted by an accord similar to the smell of the forest floor which provides the fragrance a sort of aronatic, fresh and clear expression. I guess this is achieved by the mossy and patchoulinotes interacting with the spices. To me Black Tourmaline is totally unsweet, opposed to MdO Cuir which have some resin sweetness. Sometimes I find such total lack of sweetness i a perfume as a relief.

Black Tourmaline is, just as MdO Cuir, a sort of "outdoor perfume" a fragrance which immediately gives me associations to the autumnal hunt in the swedish forests. The woody and damp smells from the forest, the smoke from the campfire when taking the lunchbreak, the smell from the well oiled riefles and smeared leathery guncases, the woolen, moleskin and leathery smells from the clothes. Black Tourmaline is a unisex fragrance not leaning either to the masculine or feminine side as opposite to MdO Cuir which I find very masculine. It's a perfume for daytime casual wear but could be worn to work if very sparingly applied, this is potent stuff. Sillage is medium and longevity for 12h+.

Black Tourmaline could  be appreciated by those who likes Amouage Interlude Man, Carner Barcelona Cuirs and Nasomatto Black Afgano.

Amouage - Interlude Man

Just as its female counterpart Amouage Interlude Man starts up anything but pleasant. Interlude Man starts with a strong, burned accord, resembling a turned up version of the burned wood accord of  Mona di Orios Les Nombres d'Or Cuir (in swedish summary in english here). As the accord in Cuir is leaning to the smell of an open fire accord where some meat is grilled a grey autumnday, the burned accord in Interlude Man remids me of the smell of burnt rhubarb pie as there is a light vanillic note glimpsing in the background. When the smoke has tuned down to a more comfortable level the tart, green, rhubarb note becomes more apparent. As rhubarb is not in the notelist, I suspect there is the oregano, the pepper and the incense that creates the tart and spritzy sensation. There is also something that is close to the taste of Zig-Zag pastilles (at least swedish readers probably knows this, pached in small red boxes with white letters on.) In the basenotes Interlude Man settles in well blended, woody, among them the typical oudnote, slight leathery notes. The woody note is smell very natural to me, almost as I sniff on a just cutted down conifers. The projection is large (be warned don't overapply this one) and the longevity is great, 24h+. Interlude Man suits very well for evenings but also as a scent for the day during the colder month of the year. To me Interlude Man is unisex even if leaning to the masculine side. Just to compare, I think Mona di Orios Cuir is more masculine in its expression than Interlude Man.

All in all I think Interlude Man is to close to Mona di Orios Cuir in style and personally I like Cuir better as it's more firm and clear in it's smokey, rough leathery woody character. Interlude Man feels like more uncertain about what it wants to convey. Starts though and rough but later leans anxiously to some tarter ans also sweeter subnotes. The blend also weakens in character and becomes more common, dry, peppery, woody, oud in style, a style that is all but original these days. In the latest stage of the basenotes the blend clears up and get much more interesting: The tart note similar to a smoother geranium becomes evident and this latest stage of Interlude Man i also think is the best one, the oud is similar to that in Mona di Orios Les Nombres d'Or Oud. All in all Interlude Woman to me are more uncommon and therefore I, despite its muddly note (on me), appreciate it much more than Interlude Man.

The Perfume(s) of New Years Eve

Photo: Mr Parfumista (c)

For New Years Eve Mona di Orios Tubereuse won me over. My other alternatives was MdO:s Nuit Noire and Oud. Tubereuse is a gentle, lightly spicy, putty tuby, with someting that reminds me of a teanote on my skin. Nothing like the Fracas bombshell, which is one of my top favorite perfumes.

Mr Parfumista was wearing his Christmas gift and growing favorite MdO:s Cuir. Though, rough and smoky, a perfect scent a cold and frosty day, just as the last day of 2011.

Don't know what our guests for New Years Eve were wearing. One of them is very found of Penhaglions Artemisia but her bottle has run out since long.

An ambition for this blog 2012 is to increase the numbers of posts in english. But as I already have many pre-written in swedish, the english posts will increase gradually. And sometimes I just have not enough time to translate from swedish.

Now I looking forward to a great perfumeyear 2012!

Mona di Orio Les Nombres d'Or - Ambre, Cuir and Musc - update December 2011

Picture: Novemberrose (end of November 2011)
Photo: Mr Parfumista (c)

Further thoughts regarding the first three Les Nombres d'Or fragrances after additional testings.

Ambre: Update 12/16/2011:  My latest wearings of Ambre has deepen my affection for it. For my first testings in fall/winter 2010 I used a small spray-samplevial. But it seems that this airy, dry, gunpowdery, ambery beauty that gives me the image of a pale salmon pink cashmere jumper paired with a pearl necklace, have to be dabbed to obtain its full beauty. The large splash sample that I received earlier this fall from Monas businesspartner Jeroen Oude Sogtoen at Mona di Orio Parfums only allowed dabbing and that's obviously the key to the soul of Ambre.

Rating increased to 5.

Cuir: Update 12/15/2011: Cuir is the roughest leather I have tried, Kölnisch Juchte included. It is like a well worn, heavy, black leather jacket infused with the smell from the smoke of the campfire. The cardamonnote is present to me during the full dry down and in some strange way it (or something else) embeds the smoky-leathery aromas in slight soapy texture which mediates the feeling of tarsoap. Even if I really enjoy Cuir I think it is more of a masculine type of leather, a departure from the usually so über-Femme fragrances of Mona. But Cuir definitly has it place in this household, it's a ideal fragrance for Mr Parfumista.

Rating still 5.

Musc: Update 12/17/2011: Today my impression of Musc is more soapy (which I love) than during my earlier testings. Before I found it more powdery but compared to the dry Ambre, Musc appears soapy. The impression of a soft pale, pink rose interacting with soapy neroli resting on a bed of warm heliotrophe and powdery tonka consists. Just as Ambre, Musc is a fragrance that perfectly fits when wearing soft chasmere in a pale pastel colour. But as Ambre is the more sensual thight fitting cashmerejumper, Musc is the proper and decent twinset.

Rating still 5.

To sum up: Excellent, retrostyled perfumes that makes the wearer dream. No doubt that Mona has more than fullfilled that intention with her beautiful creations.

Mona di Orio - Les Nombres d'Or Cuir

Foto: Parfumista (c)

Mysk(o) vecka...

Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDT (NR): En tillbakahållet blommig mysk som ger mig associationen varm bilklädesel i konstläder i en gammal amerikanare.

Musc Samarkand (Les Nereides): Den ljusaste mysken sist.
