The Fragrances of Christmas Eve 2023

The Scent of Christmas Eve (grey outside and daytime temprature ca - 3 C) ice-glaced and just the right volume of snow. I was wearing my Christmas gift from a sample, opened the parcel in the evening: L'Eau Scandaleuse created by breton perfumer Anatole Lebreton. This is one of the very best and intriguing tubereuses according to me. It's a cold, "strip down" tubereuse combined with hints of cosmetic notes, a n impression of something boudoir.-ish. There is also an intriguing sort of slight gasoline-tarry leather in the basenotes.  L'Eau Scandaleuse has been on my radar for years, worn sparingly, using  samples.  When locking at the notes and my impression described above, L'Eau Scandaleuse is great to wear outdoors for exemple walking in the forest in early spring. 

Mr Parfumista  was wearing an old Christmas Eve classic - Knize Ten. It's great for the occasion and it reminds me of that I have yet to try to wear it myself.

2018: Rubj Extrait by Vero Kern (warm, glowing orange in spices and elegant white flowers) 

2017: Vert de Fleur by Tom Ford (elegant retro but also contemporary austere flowery-green.)

2016: Oud Sublime Parfums de Nicolaï (quality "forest-refreshing" dark green, mossy, woody) 

2015: Rose de Taif Extrait Perris Monte Carlo (high class smooth velvety rose petals) 

2014: Impossible Iris Ramòn Monegal (an elegant, contempory iris with a delicious rasperrynote) 

2013: Quintaesensia Ramòn Monegal, (a special retro styled blend, furry, ambery, herbal/spicy)

PS For New Years Eve I followed up with the real boudoir scent of the Anatoles I've tested - the ultimate lipstick fragrance Incarnata a dangerous slight furry relative, also with a significant myrrh accord, to the in comparision, well-mannered  Les Exclusifs de Chanel Misia Edp. Mr Parfumista was wearing the nosepleasing Byredo Black Saffron a sucessful blend of rose and saffron ending up in a comforting, creamy, leathery accord.

PPS This year I've also forgotten the Midsummerfragrancepost - a half  of a year  later I can announce it was Les Eaux de Chanel  Paris - Riviera, well suited as it was sunny an quite warm to be a northen Midsummereve.

The Scent of Christmas Eve (sunny outside and daytime temprature ca -10) and just a little powdery snow is the comforting Tobacco Rose from Papillion Artisan Perfumes created by the founder of the perfumehouse, Liz Moores. Like a very dark red rose placed over moisty but fresh smelling moss, honeyd - beewax accord, almost cold balsamic notes over slight salty ambregris.  Something smelling like pickled juniperberries is also teasing my nose. Overall Tobacco  Rose is very natural smelling and a suitable scent for cold weather when relaxing indoors. Mr Parfumista is wearing a real classic: Knize Ten with its fascinationg and characteristic  notes of  high quality wool fabric. The youngsters are wearing Chanel Les Exclusifs Sycomore EDT respectively no perfume at all.

Parfum d'Empire - Cuir Ottoman (new & old version)

Cuir Ottoman is created by ISIPCA perfumer Marc-Antoine Corticchiato for his own perfumehouse, Parfum d'Empire. Parfum d'Empire is a house that produces first class perfumes to decent prices (to be niche) also after the re-packing, and it also seems to, slight revison of the earlier fragrances. When it comes to Cuir Ottoman, revision is definitly the case at least to my nose when comparing the first version launched in 2006 with the new one.

Cuir Ottoman starts leathery-floral, the newer one airier and with more flowers than the older one. After a while the old one becomes a bit smokey, supported by a rubbery note, slight similar to the rubber in Bulgari Black. The rubbernote is intricate and surpringly shifts between the rubber and a note similar to something to a flowery bubblegumnote. When the new version developes, the higher octaves of the scentscale and the more flowery impression remains. Instead of the rubbery note in the old version, I smell a note close to gunpowder balancing the flowerinfused leather. The new version is a tad more feminin in style, more elegant than the more masculine tougher and rougher old version, somewhat like the elegant Chanel Cuir de Russie compared to the masculine Knize Ten even if not smelling the same. As Cuir Ottoman dries down in the still leathery basenotes, I find new and old version becoming more alike than in the earlier stages, even if the old version is a tad more spicy and deeper.

Cuir Ottoman is a very good leather fragrance in the basic classic style that every fragrance wardrobe needs. Not demanding or or particularly innovative but a well made and well balanced leather in a timeless style. When writing this review, a grey autumn Sunday, I slightly prefer the old version, which with its a bit darker facetts is suitable for autumn and winter. But if the testing was performed in spring/summer I maybe would prefer the new version.

Cuir Ottoman is appropriate for most occasions (apart from working out) and seasons (though not in the hottest summer). Longevity is good, for more than a day, and sillage is somewhere between close to medium. To conclude, Cuir Ottoman is definitely a leather to consider when adding a classic "Cuir" to ones wardrobe.

Mona di Orio - Les Nombres d'Or Violette Fumèe

And, I want a suit/some suits in one or some of theese beauties :-)

Violette Fumée is a fragrance created by Mona di Orio specially for her businesspartner Jeroen Oude Sogtoen. Violette Fumée is created to feature the person Jeroen, who he is, his memories from the past and things he likes. Almost two years after the great perfumer Mona di Orio:s untimely death, Jeroen has released his personal fragrance in public and I think we could be grateful he did this move, because Violette Fumèe is a great fragrance, a fragrance I appreciate the more I smell it.

Violette Fumée starts with a slight herbal note, a note of a fresh but in the same time dark lavander supported with some bergamot fizz and green, leafy notes. After a while violets both flowers and the leaves appears. The violets are dark and woody-leafy in style, just as they are popping up under big old threes, deep in the forest, breaking through the carpet of old moldering leaves from last year. The violet flower stays during the whole dry down, in the middlenotes supported by subtle green, woody and rosy notes and in the base resins and woody notes together creates a slight sweet and smoky impression. In the middelnotes I can also recognize the typical "dust on a lighted bulb" note from Monas first fragrance Carnation but more subdued in Violette Fumée. Another characteristic for Violette Fumée is the dry, woolen-fabric quality of the fragrance, Violette Fumée evokes the feeling of visting the tailor who's measuring up an extraordinary wool-fabric for a suit. The tailor association is also strenghted by the fact that I can smell similarities with the most classic tailor fragrance ever: Knize Ten. The dry woolen note and the images of tailormade are similar and to me Violette Fumèe is a contemporary violet - dark herbal take on the classic leather Knize Ten. Another dry-woolen-tailor fragrance which comes to my mind when giving attention to the woolen fabricnote, is Penhaligons Sartorial.

Violette Fumée is a unisex fragrance which in my opinon is leaning more to the masculine side. Maybe it has to do with skinchemistry but from testings in the House of Parfumista the test results is clear: Mr Parfumista wears this much better than myself which could be disappointing but the good news are: He is wearing Violette Fumée extremly well, just as well as Knize Ten, and indeed, I can live with experiencing this beautiful fragrance by proxy :-)

Jardins d'Écrivains - George

Jardins d'Écrivains is French nichehouse which started with scented candles and bathproducts and lately also added perfumes to their line. Jardins d'Écrivains in its style, is inspired of litterature combined with the interest of gardens. The four perfumes in the line whereof two leaning at the masculine side and therefore (and as "skintime" is rare when it comes to me :-) the testing of these fragrances, George and Wilde is delegated to Mr Parfumista. Below I have summerized his impressions of George while Wilde will follow in the next review.

George is of course inspired of the 19th century cultwoman Aurore Dupin married Dudevant aka George Sand who already have some fragrances named after her: Histoires de Parfums 1804 George Sand and Les Parfums Historique (MPG) Eau de Parfum de George Sand. When applying the reaction was "This smells so similar to something else" and after a short while everything went clear: One of the greatest classic tobacco-leather ever, Knize Ten, but George is smoother and gentler in appearance, adapted to the stripped down  fragranceastetic of the general public of today.  There is also a difference in notes: Where Knize Ten intermediates the scent of the clean woolen cloth of an tailor-made suit and tabacco, George intermediates the scent of fresh,dark, green conifer during a warm and windy summerday and tabacco. The green, coniferaccord is of the same spirit as in Annick Goutal Nuit Etoilèe but deeper and darker and without the smoky note of NE.

George is a year arounder and it's fresher character compared to Knize Ten makes it suitable also for more casual events than the more formal Knize. Mr Parfumista likes George very much but comments: "It's sort of a contemporary Knize but not fully accomplished in the way Knize is".George is classified as unisex but leaning towards the masculine side, for those who cares about such petty details. Sillage is medium and longevity for about 24h.

As the forerunner Knize is the original, George just almost reach the highest rating. If there was no Knize forerunner, George would reach the highest score. George is an exellent alternative for those who thinks Knize Ten is too heavy and oldfashioned, which it's not, as it's timeless, but that's of course just my personal opinion :-). George is also a good example of that very good perfumes could be made today also despite all IFRA-restrictions and it is also, just as the whole Jardins d'Écrivains-line, an axample of that good fragrances could also be reasonable priced SEK 725/USD ca 114/EUR ca 83 for 100 ml.

Rating: 4 or 4+ depending on perspective, with or without comparing to Knize Ten

Puredistance - M

M is the masculine (or most masculine) fragrance in the excellent Puredistance line. It's a masculine oriental in the classical style, featuring soft leather notes. Even if classified as masculine, the elegant and smooth construction of the fragrance makes it suitable also for a brave woman, the same situation as with Aramis JHL. M is created by Roja Dove.

M starts with topnotes dominated by a natural leathernote, a leathernote like the scent of an elegant briefcase. After the leathery start, M transforms into a close wellbalanced spicyness with clear notes of carnation and clove. The leather takes a step behind but is still recognizable in the background. In this stage a very light and smooth note that reminds me of a soft, refined curry appears among the other spicy notes. On my skin anyway, this note is not clearly apparent on Mr Parfumista. In the basenotes, M get balsamic-resiny and more leathery again, a deeper and muskier leather than in the topnotes. To conclude it all: On my skin M is a harmonious mix of leather,carnation and spices.

Overall M gives me the association of resting in a wellworn armchair, nestled in a cashmereblanket, sipping an excellent cognac, in front of the fireplace at some old country estate.
M is most of all a masculine fragrance, but is so gentle and refined that it could also be worn comfortably by a women. In that sense M is unisex. M is a wellcrafted, comfortable fragrance made of quality ingredients and it suits both for formal worksituations and for festivite occasions. With its warmth M perfectly suits the colder months of the year, but I suspect it could also be fine for chillier summerevenings.

M is similar to Hermès great Bel Ami but to my and Mr Parfumistas noses, M is more leathery, darker, boozier and closer than the current version of  Bel Ami, but the style, and apperance is the same. M is even more close to the old Bel Ami-version in the "coctail-shaker-bottle" which is thicker, spicier and somehow boozier in texture. There are also similarities between M and the real leather classic Knize Ten and the contemporary but classic in style Cuir Mauresque by Serge Lutens. My nose also find some traces (the spicy cinnamon-warmth) of JHL (original formula).

M wears closer to the skin than Bel Ami but then M also is in perfumestrength whereas Bel Ami is in Edt concentration and therefore has a more extensive radiation. Longevity is about the same for both fragrances, they lasts for about 24h.

Current Rotation - November 2011

Kunde inte motstå att utmanas av PereDePierres lista över favoriter just nu. Listor är ju sååååå pirrigt spännande. Så här kommer en ögonblicksbild av min Current Rotation:

28 La Pausa (Chanel Exclusifs): Denna lätta, transparenta iris, blomma inte morotsaktig irisrot, på likaleds lätt träig, vetiverig bas, är elegant, lugnande och meditativ. Trots sin lätthet sitter den utmärkt på mig under hela dagen. Den perfekta doften ins Büro.

Youth Dew (Estee Lauder): Tack och lov att jag kapat åt mig en flaska igen. Efter att herr Parfumista uttalat att den luktar tant på mig sålde jag min tidigare på Tradera för att något halvår senare over by Octavian läsa att det då var hög tid att kapa åt sig en flarra YD då diverse IFRA restriktioner kommer att förstöra den kapitalt framöver. Så nu har jag en YD igen, pust! Och plötsligt anser herr Parfumista att den doftar bra...

Nuit de Cellophane (Serge Lutens): Testade några SL och NdC hann inte få plats för hudtest den första omgången utan bara på sticka. Efter något dygn viftade herr Parfumista med stickan med kommentaren "det här är nog något för dig". Testning följde och (som så ofta ska erkännas) så hade han rätt: NdC ist aber sehr Fantastisch! Vit fruktig blomma på skitig bas med prassliga träfibrer. FBW!

Cuir Fetiche (MPG): Som en feminin variant av herr Parfumistas Knize Ten, som jag är förbjuden att låna "jag måste få ha de dofter som är jag i fred". CdF är något av en lufitigare Knize med blommor och en lite mer tydlig lädernot adderad. Wunderbar!

L'Ombre Fauve (Parfumerie Générale): Ganska ofta blir jag besviken på ambradofter, de är helt enkelt för rena, linjära och tråkiga. Så inte L'Ombre Fauve som är en mörk ambra med lite patchoulli och med odjuret lurande i skuggorna med en pälsigt, animalisk not.

Cendres de The (Phaedon): Tydlig och klar kardemumma, the och pepprigt cederträ som rent schablonmässigt passar bäst den varma årstiden men faktiskt även nu under den halvvarma.

En kort analys av det hela: Jag tycker mig se att det för årstiden härligt milda vädret (rosor och tusenskönor blommar i trädgården) avspeglar sig i ögonblicksfavoriterna. Vissa dagar är lite ruggigare och då blir det tyngre "vinterdofter" men om man ska generaliera så är i stort sett hela parfymgarderoben lämplig att använda just nu. För den parfymtokige är alltså vädret det optimala, så det får gärna fortsätta så här resten av vintern.

På tal om listor så är min bruttolista över årets parfymer 2011 i det närmaste klar, några ska (kanske) sållas ut. Svårt att tänka mig att något mer utgivet 2011 ska hinna tränga sig in. Finns dock en runner up, en exklusiv liten sak som jag tänker prova på julafton. Om den här typen av väder står sig i alla fall.

Testresultat sommaren 2010

Vilka dofter är det då som på något sätt lämnat avtryck från testandet sommaren 2010? Jo:
L'Eau de Epicèe (Andy Tauer): Mycket kraftfull  och fin doft som i mitt tycker är en Tauervariant av klassikern Knize Ten (som enligt uppgift också är en av Andys egna favoriter).  Det har i mitt tycke börjat gå lite för fort med Andys lanseringar, de blir helt enkelt för lika. Här finns den typiska Tauerbasen och för många likheter med Orange Star. L'EdE  kommer att lanseras senare under hösten.
Futur (Robert Piguet): Det verkar som om alla lanseringarna av de omarbetade Piguetklassikerna faller mig i saken. Futur är en grön galbanumdröm som doftar något i stil med, som jag inbillar mig,  att den ursprungliga Vent Vert gjorde.
Maharadhja (Parfums de Nicolaî): Äntligen en lavendeldoft som faller ut till 100 % på mig. Min hud har annars svårt för lavendel. Kanske beror det på att det är en orientalisk lavendel, i basen finns bland annat ambra och jag har med tiden kunnat konstatera att ambrabaserade dofter oftast gör sig bra på mig.
Oriental Lounge (The Different Company): Den här moderna, alternativa orientalen är jag helt såld på. Full review kommer inom kort.
Psychotrope (Parfumerie Generale): Har tidigare testat denna men inte reagerat. Men den här gången föll denna ovanliga kombination av cyklamen och läder på plats. Den har en avskräckande, plastig inledning men sedan så...
