Place des Lices - Fiordlatte

Fiordlatte from Place de Lices starts a bit sharp with notes of green grass and some flowery notes. I bet I can smell a moderated galbanum, even if not mentioned in the notelist. When Fiordlatte settles a bit, a pleasant, soapy, glabanumlike, note appears. It’s similar to the “antique, bathroom, chalky” note that is also present, but more intense, in Vanille Tonka from Parfums de Nicolaï. This accord is fading, but not disappear completely, in a nice, a bit paper-dry in texture, white floral accord. Despite the “bathroom” vibe it’s not a watery floral of the kind that is en vouge by now for exemple Live in Love by Oscar de la Renta or Water Calligraphy from By Kilian. The white floral note feels more timeless and the dry white floral impression is more in the style of Un Amour de Patou by Jean Patou and Montale Crystal Flowers (even if rose centered) but subdued in comparasion.In the basenotes Fiordlatte becomes light musky and moistier. A slight sour note (in a positive way) which is present in many light rosefragrances becomes detectable and I think it’s the note of peony.

Fiordlatte is the perfect outdoor casualscent especially for spring and summer, preferably at sea as the dry white flowers will balance perfectly with the salty air by the seaside. Fiordlatte is also a nice casual or officescent when one has to be reminded of the lighter seasons of the year.

Maria Candida Gentile - Hanbury

This weeks jurney to beautiful Italians Villa-gardens continuies also today. Villa Hanbury is a north italian Villa by the sea with a beautiful garden founded 1867 by the Hanbury family who runned the gardens for many decades but was passed to the University of Genova about thirty years ago. Among the flowers cultivated in the botanic garden, the golden mimosa is a speciality of the Hanbury garden and the flowers are also used to produce essence of mimosa. Mimosa of different types are present in some classical or familiar perfumes as Carons Farnesia, Annick Goutal Le Mimosa (in swedish) and Edition de Parfums Frederic Malle Une Fleur de Cassie. Mimosa is also the protagonist in Maria Candida Gentiles golden nectar Hanbury, a just beautiful fragrance that, just as intended, immediately transports me to a mediterrian garden in bloom.

Hanbury starts with a golden blast that I precive as produced by medium yellow flowers even if some withe especially the orangeblossom, also have prominent roles. On my skin a delicious orangeblossom is the most prominent note. There is also a winterblowing flower, Calycanthus praecox, in the fragrance, winterblooming flowers is unusual even in northen Italy. I don't know how it smells but I suspect it's one of the very nice notes that radiates from my skin wearing Hanbury. The florals are velvety in its structure and give me the impression of beeing soaked in honey and resting over a slight dry resiny base. Hanbury is a smooth and somehow full perfume and it has a beautiful depth. As the rest of the Maria Candida Gentile line, there a high precentage of naturals in the blend, something that is particulary evident in Hanbury, the flowery impression is very authentic. Compared to another delicious orangeblossom in a similar style, Sweet Redemption (summary in english) by ByKilian, Hanbury is more clean and flowery and SR more of a liquary and sweeter orangeblossom.

Hanbury is a beautiful, wellcrafted and casual- elegant fragrance that could be worn year around but blooms beautiful in warm weather. It's very feminine in style and wraps the wearer in comfort and pleasure. Sillage is close to the skin and longevity is medium almost for a day.

Oscar de la Renta - Live in Love

Live in Love is an elegant, easy to wear, daytime green floral created for Oscar de la Renta by three perfumers in colaboration: Jean-Marc Chaillan, Carlos Benaim and Ann Gottlieb.

Live in love, despite its notes of classic though green notes as bergamott, hyacinth and galbanum, starts as a modern, fresh, clean green floral but without either the detergent note or the "just climbing out from the shower"freshness. The flowers are bright but not weak in appearence and there is also a complementing, subdued fruitiness present. All together this creates a watery impression, as of waterflowers in a pond. There is similarities with ByKilian Water Calligraphy and with the overall impression of Bulgari Omina Coral even if that one is much more fruity and sharp compared to the better balanced Live in Love.

After a while a shining almost incenselike note appears and starts to interact with the wet florals and their supprting slight fruity notes. This incensenote create an interesting contrast to the fruity notes and helps to put them forward. The incense like note I think is a subdued ginger and maybe traces of soft cedarwood (if looking at the notelist anyway).A very successful ginger interpretation as ginger often is too screamy, bubbeling andspritzy, almost as an overdose of  freshly minced white pepper.This interesting and appealing interaction between the "incense" and the fruity-floral notes goes on duirng the middlenotes and as the ginger tunes down the flowery/fruity notes lands in a pleasant woody, musky base.

Live in Love with it's sort of unsweet elegant slight fruity,wet floral, green notes and the classical ingredients (galbanum, hyacinth, bergamot) interpreted in a modern way is the perfect officescent suitable year around but especially for spring, summer and the early autumn. It's present but quite close to the wearer and can't offend (almost) anyone. The longevity is great,it lasts for 24h.

Live in Love is an evidence that good "mainstream"/designerfragrances could be created today also. It's seems that Oscar de la Renta has revived some of it's former glory in perfume especially with the launch of the beautiful aldehydic composition Esprit d'Oscar but also Live in Love is a good example of what could be created if the intention is there. The coming Essential Luxuries seems also very interesting and I hope I get the opportunity to smell them later on.

Live in Love could be appreciated for the fans of the fragrances mentioned above but also for those who like Dior Escale à Pondichery, Gala de Dia (review in swedish) by Loewe and By Kilian Bamboo Harmony.

Kerosene – Copper Skies

Some amber marinated in tobacco oil, with coconutty leathery, almost medical notes surrounded by a wiff of menthol. The opening of Michigan self learned perfumer John Peggs Copper Skies is brutal and almost exaggerated, the impression is as the fragrance is blended in an old oil drum in the perfumers garage. This perfectly fits the image of John Pegg, the former automobile worker, now devoted to perfume creation for his own line of Kerosene. The leather – coconut note in Copper Skies reminds me of an accord in ELDO Rien and/or Tom of Finland, as I remember this is present in both these fragrances, with a rougher edge in Rien and smoother in Tom of Finland. Mr Parfumista also smells a dark lavendelnote maybe a concentrated lavendeloil smells like this. 

As Copper Skies calms down in the middlenotes, the amber becomes more apparent, and the blend becomes smoother and appears as a contemporary (not classic) amber surrounded by smooth and moderatly sweet honey accentuated with spices and cloves. There is no for the amber genre typical vanillanote, for example in By Kilian Amber Oud, something that differs Copper Skies from a lot off classical ambers. There is neither the obvious herbal ackord, typical for the more masculine ambers in the style of MPG  Ambre Precieux  and HdP Ambre 114. During the dry down Mr Parfumista smells traces of the note of silver polish present in Annick Goutal Vetiver and also some of the darker elements from Sables. As Copper Skies reaches the basenotes something unusual happening, it’s as the fragrance retakes, the amber/tobacco/clove accord becomes more intense and also whiffs of the menthol note appears again.

Copper Skies is a rough and tough fragrance, far from fine “haute couture perfumery”. There is a more or less muted ELDO-vibe during the whole developement of Copper Skies. But as mentioned above, some Goutals are also present and maybe there is a part of the secret of the Copper Skies sucess: Each wearer can recognise some of his/hers favoritescents.  Copper Skies also mediates a somehow homemade impression but in a positive, relieving way. The only thing that annoys me with Copper Skies and which lower its rating, is the feeling that the components doesn't blend together enough. It's like the perfumer has trown in different comfortable fragrances but haven't mixed them properly together and they are existing side by side/as followers of each other. On the other hand this gives the fragrance a own identity and as the same pattern is recognizable also in Kerosenes green creation Creature, this is mabye the characteristic mark of the Kerosenebrand.

Copper Skies is werable the year around, as it lacks the vanilla sweetness it’s also suitable for summer. Of course, as it name indicates, it’s a perfect late autumn scent, when the leaves has fallen from the trees, lying sparkling of yellow, orange and red of the ground, the air is chilly and the orange, blue, grey clouds chases across the sky. The longevity of Copper Skies is amazing 24+ , the blend is strong, heavy application is prohibited J . The development of the fragrance is interesting, the least interesting part is the middlenotes, but this is offset of the cozy feeling that this stage mediates, this is a constant wrist-sniffing stage. I’m sure Copper Skies will be a comfortable fragrance (despite it’s brutal start) to fall back upon days when I don’t know what to wear during the colder months. Copper Skies is truly unisex, even the picky Mr Parfumista sneaks from this and as there is very few new releases that please him nowadays, this is a high mark for Copper Skies. I rarely blindbuying frags, but in this case I'm glad I did it, despite it seems as Mr Parfumista has taken over the bottle :-)

By Kilian - Bamboo Harmony

Bamboo Harmony is the other of the two Calice Becker fragrances released 2012 in the ByKilian Asian Tales line.The line is planned to continue at least five fragrances which will be launched during the next three years.

As with Water Calligraphy earlier this week, I've recognize another fragrance immediately when spraying BH. This time I recognize a smoother Escale à Pondichéry by Dior in the earlier stages of the dry down infused with some hints of Keiko Mecheris Les Nuits D'Izu. After a while BH is back on the smoother EsP trail, with less spices, tea and jasmine than EsP BH is a nicer and more polite version on the citrus-tea-aromatic-flowery theme. Nice, pleasant, refreshing and harmless, this is the perfect officescent for summer. Also as well suited for casual wear.

Well blended and polished, no harsh or sharp notes but unoriginal and somehow dull to be an expensive By Kilian frag.

By Kilian - Water Calligraphy

Taking a break in my spring-violet serie, reviewing the new ByKilians:

Sorry Kilian! Despite the creation Water Calligraphy by Calice Becker for ByKilian is a very nice, well executed water lily - lotus flower dominated fragrance it is a disappointment to med. This because WC :-) smells just like old (1996) Gala de Dia by Loewe rebottled.

Starts slight fruity, followed by white watery flowers which  conveys a natural, non-chemical, watery impression. It's like sitting in the shadow during a hot summerday at a small pond with water lilies and greenerys. WC is liniar in it's structure, well blended and with a great longevity and this fragarance willl cope with the hottest days during the summer. Wearable both for casual and to work. WC has similarities in style with Bulgaris watery, fruity, flowery Omnia Coral but the latter is sharper and headier than the sleeker WC.

To summon up: A nice, well blended, refreshing frag that I really like but it lacks the originality and non-copied style that I expect from a house in ByKilians pricerange.

Update April 2014: Water Calligraphy has grown to be a favorite watery, flower to me. I find it minimalistic and beautiful, it is calming and relaxing. It was in the end of last summer when Water Calligraphy suddenly "klicked" for me. I think that the minimalistic approach makes it easy to dismiss some of the Kilan fragrances at first. But the Kilian fragrances are not simple at all, on the contrary, they seems to have hidden layers that ensures the wearer will not loose interest over time. They are of god quality and easy to wear, sort of fragrance wardrobe staples.

By Kilian - Ambre Oud

By Kilian latest creation in the Arabian Nights collection Ambre Oud is a well-mannered amber composed by the (almost) housenose Calice Becker.

In the topnotes Ambre Oud starts as a relatively clean amber, followed by some traces of a light powderness. As the scent drys down it becomes a little darker and also sweeter as ther is a obvious note of a fine vanilla (like vanilla pods) in the base. The vanilla reminds me of the vanilla note in Havana Vanille by L'Artisan Parfumeur. There are also woody notes in Ambre Oud but not much oud, to my nose anyway. Maybe Ambre Oud is build among the same idea as the earlier release Incense Oud, a parfume without oud that are intended to get the olfactory image of oud. But Ambre Oud doesen't even give me that oud image as Incense Oud does.

To me Ambre Oud is a good but not groundbreaking amberperfume, wearable for most occasions during the colder months. A good choice among others for customers who are searching for an elegant basic amberperfume without oddities. It's an alternative to the likes of Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan or Ormonde Jaynes Tolu. Ambre Oud never gets as dry, fluffy and (gun)powdery as Mona di Orios Les Nombres d'Or Ambre nor dark, dusky and slight dirty as L'Ombre Fauve by Pafumerie Générale, my two favorite ambers.

First I rated this 3+ because I don't think it's original enough even if well balanced and of good quality. That rating made Mr Parfumista upset as he thinks Ambre Oud is a very good fragrance and deserves a rating at least as 4 or actually higher. As he is very picky about fragrances I had to reconsider my earlier rating and raise it a step. Mr Parfumistas own rating of Ambre Oud ís at least 4+.

Unsorted perfume thoughts February 2012

Unsorted thoughts in my perfumeoriented mind:

- What a relief that January is over. I had promised myself only testing/using samples and I always keep promises :-) I have so longed for using my bottles that have waiting for me. Now I'm free to wear them even if testing from samples will be the main activity in February as well. And as today I'm still sampling... Maybe 2012 will be the year draining the samples...
- I think the lesson above is very enlighting: It  it makes me really appreciate my collection. But on the other hand; sampling also raises new temptations and thats one of the trills in testing perfume.
- The other day I passed through the perfumesection at the local department store and in passing sprayed the latest Versace Yellow Diamond: Citrusy-fruity-chemichal hell, I immadiately had to find a paperbin to throw the horrible scent strip away. I liked the first one Crystal Noir quite well, is neutral to Bright Crystal. How could this disaster happen?
-Two - three weeks ago, winter has finally caught us up in this nordic outpost. Strangly enough I don't yearn for my oriental lieblings. Instead I'm mostly stucked in heavy florals and Vero Kerns Kiki Edp which is just beautiful.
- Looking into my tweets there are much MPG testing the latest month. This house is a growing liking to me. Even if I have appreciated some of it's fragrances for many years I now have started to appreciate the different themes of the house. Earlier I was much more simplistic.
- A few days ago I've re-tested By Kilians clean and realistic jasmine Love and Tears, Surrender. It's just as beautiful as when i tried it last spring/summer. If not better as it lasts very well, without falling apart, more than twelve hours in the cold weather (- 10 C).  Love it!
- Yesterday I was wearing Teo Cabanels Alahine, a sweet, almost licqouary floral oriental that developes excellent in the cold (-15 C) snowy, weather. Maybe I turn into the orientals at last.

By Kilian - Rose Oud

Åhhh, jag vet inte var jag ska börja. Rose Oud är en doft som gör mig färdig att utrangera halva parfymgarderoben, innan jag kommer till sans igen och inser att det i längden ändå är variation som gäller. Rose Oud är en sådan där mörk, dov och mystisk rosendoft som jag bara älskar. Dessutom med en av mina favorittränoter oud. Jag får aldrig nog av den här typen av doft, känns som att jag kan prova och njuta av hur många varianter på temat som helst utan att tröttna. Rose Oud är en del av By Kilians orientaliska kollektion Arabian Nights och är skapad av Calice Becker som gjort de flesta av By Kilians dofter. Review av Incense Oud finns från april.

Rose Oud inleds med ros och en lätt oud. Det är inte en tuff och dominerande oud som i flera av Montales dofter utan den är snällare, mjukare och finstämt harmonierande. Det finns, vad jag läst, en del äkta oud inblandad men jag gissar att det som i de flesta västerländska ouddofter också finns en del syntetisk vara. Saffransnoten är inte särskilt dominant utan jag upplever den som en supportnot som ger värme och kraft till Rose Oud. Rosendoften känns som om den kommer av högkvalitativ rosenolja och den varierar och uppträder olika i olika stadier av doften. På mig känns den, konstigt nog, först mörkröd och mystiskt djup för att senare anta ljusare och fruktiga facetter. I denna fas kan man tro att det finns fruktiga ingredienser tillsatta även om några sådana finns inte angivna och rosenolja av viss sort och i viss kombination antar just en fruktig karaktär. Ett dygn senare känns något som påminner om en pudrig mellanrosa ros och det finns också inslag som dofter som en nyponrosbuske en varm sommardag. Troligen är det, som notlistan antyder, flera varianter av rosenolja (och säkert även syntetisk ros) inblandat eftersom jag känner så många rosendoftsvarianter.

Rosenvariationerna gör verkligen Rose Oud till en unik doft där det under hela parfymens utveckling händer nya spännande saker. Ändå känner jag likheter med flera andra favoriter i mörk ros genren. Först och främst med Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle:s Portrait of a Lady som Rose Oud är mest lik även om jag upplevar PoaL som ännu mörkare. Men Rose Oud har också många gemensamma noter med Téo Cabanels Alahine även om den senare har mer dragning åt klassisk pudrig oriental och Rose Oud åt mörk trädoft med ambroxan. Även om ambroxan inte finns angivet bland ingredienserna så tror jag nog att den lurar där i basen, precis som i PoaL. I den fruktigt rosiga fasen finns noter som påminner om Andy Tauers Une Rose Vermeille.

Rose Oud är en i mitt tycke klart feminin ros-oud kombination med en lagom projektion och en elegans som gör att den passar väldigt bra till fest även om jag tycker att man ska få njuta av sådana här underbara dofter också i den grå vardagen.

By Kilian - Pure Oud

Pure Oud är den första doften i by Kilians oudinspirerade-serie Arabian Nights. Doften är skapad av Calice Becker som de flesta av by Kilians parfymer. Pure Oud är en finstämd ouddoft som känns på något sätt ren, enkel och högkvalitativ. Mycket är gemensamt med efterföljaren Rose Oud, troligen är basen densamma. Pure Oud är mer maskulin i karaktären men passar enligt mitt tycke lika bra på kvinnor medan Rose Oud framförallt är en feminin parfym. Inlägg om Rose Oud finns i förra veckan. Review av den tredje doften i serien Incense Oud finns från april.

I Pure Oud känner jag direkt i öppningen igen noter från äkta oud-olja fast noterna i Pure Oud känns mer uttunnade. Jag har läst att det ingår äkta oud men den kan förstås vara förstärkt med syntetisk. Doften är i karaktären varm, jordig och balsamaktig. Under stor del av Pure Ouds utveckling känner jag också en doft av lagerbladsbär som påminner mig mycket om ett ackord i Andy Taurers Une Rose Chyprée. Den noten känns nästan lite gummiartad, som doften av ett solvarmt bildäck. Dessutom glimrar en lädernot fram vid ett par tillfällen, den typiska lädenot som erhålls genom kombinationen oud, saffran och ros. Pure Oud är linjär i typen men den är ändå tillräckligt intressant för att jag inte ska tråkas ut under en dag.

By Kilian - Sweet Redemption

A small update in english from January 2012, just scroll down.

Sweet Redemption från By Kilian är som de flesta dofterna från huset skapade av Calice Becker. SR är en apelsin/apelsinblommedominerad doft, jag ser en apelsilikör framför mig. Den ger bilden av en söt, bärnstensfärgad (alltså mer och varmare färg än drycken på bilden) och lite trögflytande likör i ett glas en varm  och solig sommarkväll. Apelsintemat understöds av vanilj, myrra och kådor. Trots ingredienser lliknande Mona di Orios apelsinblommetolkning Jabu (recension i maj 2011) så är den senare ganska torr och liksom brödig i karaktären medan SR alltså är söt. Men även i SR finns spår av gröna noter, som bildar en motvikt till det söta och varma samt något som påminner lite om papper. Det finns också en kittighet som jag känner igen från en del av Francis Kurkdjians dofter exempelvis Fleur de Male för JPG, apelsinblomma respektive ros är de blommor han helst arbetar med. Herr Parfumista känner också vissa likheter med Calice Beckers fina jasmindoft Love and Tears (recension i juni 2011) också för By Kilian. Kanske har de något  gemensamt basackord eller också är det så enkelt att apelsinblomma ofta kombineras med jasmin. Jag tycker också att SR förmedlar något av den lite trögflytande, liköriga känslan i Andy Tauers underbara syltiga rosendoft Une Rose Vermeille (recension i januari 2011) och det som måste vara en jasminnot känner jag igen från en annan Tauer favorit Le Maroc pour Elle. Ärligt talat så tycker jag att SR är lite väl lik Le Maroc pour Elle, även om den senare är kraftigare och har ros istället för apelsinblomma som dominerande blomma.

SR är en typisk trivseldoft som faktiskt passar året om. Jag testade den först mitt i sommaren en ganska varm dag. För trots att den är söt är den varken sliskig eller kompakt. Projektionen är någonstans mellan liten och medel, men det kan bero på låg dosering då jag misstänker att SR kan bli för söt om den överdoseras. En doft att använda när man vill må bra och känna sig riktigt komfortabel. SR är mycket väl balanserad och dofter överhuvudtaget inte kemiskt vilket tyder på högklassiga ingredienser så som i princip alltid är fallet med By Kilians dofter. Men för mig ger den lite för många associationer till andra dofter för att det riktigt ska kilcka till. Dessutom känns den på något vis alldeles för tillrättalagd och perfekt. Herr Parfumista tykcer att den är riktigt bra så jag ska prova den mer, kanske säger det "klick" till slut.

Update January 2012: Once again Mr Parfumista was right, this is a very nice perfume.
Now during the cold season it certainly has klicked for me also, just love this orangey, liquary thing. Not the  most complex brew in the world but so delicious and comforting with it's dark, marmelade notes. The rating has climbed from 3+ to 4+.

Eau d'Italie - Jardin du Poete

För den grapefrukt, apelsin-grönblommiga Jardin du Poete har italienska nichehuset Eau d'Italie återupplivat (eller det kanske bara har legat i träda ett tag) samarbetet med den snart uttjatade supernäsan Bertrand Duchaufour.

Jardin du Poete inleds friskt, obs inte kemiskt fräscht utan just friskt, och lite bittert med en not som jag tycker liknar en blandning av apelsinblomma, apelsin och grapefrukt. När dessa noter tonar ned, men fortfarande finns i en mer nedtonad version, blommar gröna blommor och blad och något färskt örtigt ut och fortsätter grönt, behagligt, friskt under resten av dagen. Det händer helt enkelt inte mycket mer. Nyckelordet är friskt när det gäller JdP.

JdP är en välbalanserad doft av god kvalitet som passar utmärkt sommartid eller när man drömmer om sommaren under en ruggig, grå-slaskig vinterdag. Särskilt gillar jag det bitter-grapiga inslaget kombinerat med soliga apelsin och apelsinblommenoter som är särskilt tydligt i början av doften. Smickrande toppnoter där inte samma höga nivå hålls i mellan och basregistren brukar dock inte vara något för mig. Och mycket riktigt, trots framförallt en fin öppning, så klickar inte JdP till för mig, den är på något sätt alldeles för perfekt och förutsägbar. Precis som min upplevelse av en annan, om än i en annan doftfamilj, av sommarens stora och bland parfymnördar hyllade dofter, By Kilians Sweet Redemption. I skrivande stund kommer jag inte på någon annan doft som är snarlik JdP men den förmedlar lite av samma känsla (inte doft) dvs lätt grönblommig casual-chic, som Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte, även om Eau Verte är mer chic och JdP mer casual.

Tyvärr verkar det som att Eau d'Italie lite har tappat stinget. Både förra årets blommiga Au Lac och i viss mån orientaliska Baume du Doge och Magnolia Romana åren innan tycker jag har tappat den kraftullhet och originaliet som de tidiga dofterna Paestum Rose, Sienne l'Hiver och Bois d'Ombrie stod för liksom att den första vid namn rätt och slätt Eau d'Italie var en fin klsssisk citrusbaserad doft med en modern tvist. Men och andra sidan är säkert de senaste två dofterna betydligt mer säljbara en de tidiga mer extrema kompositionerna.

By Kilian - Love and Tears

By Kilians Love and Tears (Surrender) är en ren, klar och högkvalitativ jasmindoft skapad av Calice Becker som i mitt tycke verkligen doftar ren jasmin. Inga irriterande binoter, som grön banan i Nasomattos i och för sig väldigt fina Nuda, se review i maj i år. Love and Tears börjar med lätt animaliska, "indoliska" noter, så sonens kommentar "luktar svinstia men samtidigt väldigt gott" stämmer på pricken. Sedan tonar det animaliska bort och en härlig, ren jasmin i bästa form blommar ut. Jag kan känna en liten lätt brödig not som mjukar upp LaT men den är bara trevlig. Sedan är det mest ren jasmin på frisk, lätt grön bas resten av dagen.

LaT är alltså tämligen linjär och enkel i sin konstruktion. Samtidigt innehåller en jasminolja av god kvalitet så många facetter att den i sig är en parfym med olika noter. Därför vinner oftast jasmindofter på enkelhet i uppbyggnaden och sparsamma doser med supporterande ingredienser. LaT är personifierar en varm och solig dag i början av sommaren. En mycket lättburen doft som passar både i jobbsammanhang och under festliga omständigheter. Perfekt för sommarbruden eller en studentska i vitt. Jag kan också tänka mig att LaT kan pigga upp en kall vinterdag med sin glada solighet. En avslappand och mycket välgjord doft som håller ofragmententerad hela dagen och som är en riktig handledsmagnet.

By Kilian - Incense Oud

Det blir en sakral inledning på Påsken. Incense Oud är den tredje i By Kilians orientaliskt inspirerade serie Arabian Nights. Incense Oud är enligt de flesta källor skapad av Sidonie Lancesseur, enligt andra av Calice Becker som skapat de flesta av By Kilians och så även de första två dofterna i Arabian Nights.

Incense Oud inleds med milda och runda rökelseträ noter, de är inte så starka, skarpa och offensiva som i exempelvis Montales Full Incense eller Comme des Garcons Avignon. Men mitt allra första intryck är för några microsekunder faktiskt något från öppningen i Teo Cabanels Alahine !. Jag känner också en lagerbärsliknande ton bland rökelseträet och en mjuk kådighet. I den andra delen av Incense Oud är det trä och patchoulli som dominerar balanserad med ros på ett så subtilt sätt att den bara anas som en stödjande not. Visst har Incense Oud likheter med sina föregångare i Arabian Night serien Pure Oud och Rose Oud, även om dessa faktiskt som namnen äger innehåller oud. Basen i Incense oud har likheter med den i Pure Oud, minus oud, läder och gummiartade "tuffa"noter. Till exempel den lagerbärsliknande noten känner jag igen från Pure Oud. Kan tänka mig att Pure Oud utgör basen i serien runt man varierar övriga dofter. Reviewer av Pure Oud och Rose Oud kommer längre fram.

För mig är Incense Oud en sofistikerad rökelseträdoft men ingen ouddoft. En sådan där mörk, hemilghetsfull parfym i genren incense-patchoulli-mörk ros-oud-kådor-ambra-musk som är min absoluta favoritgenre av doft och som gör att jag inte kommer igång med vår och sommardofter hur mycket jag än vill!

Vad jag hänger upp mig på i Incense Oud är att man kallar den oud även om jag inte känner någon oud och ingrediensen heller inte finns angiven i notförteckningen. Kanske är det som Elena på bloggen Perfume Shrine spekulerar: Att man lagt in ordet oud av rent marknadstekniska skäl, för rida på slutfasen(?) av oudtrenden se http://perfumeshrine.blogspot.com/2011/02/by-kilian-incense-oud-fragrance-review.html. I min värld är Incense Oud istället en typisk mukhallat dvs en blandning, som kan innehålla oud men inte behöver göra det. Så den borde alltså heta Mukhallat Incense.

Sammanfattningsvis är Incense Oud en mild, rund, sammetsmjuk och diskret doft med liten projektion. Det är en doft som bäraren njuter av för sig själv. Passar utmärkt både i formella och informella sammanhang, helt enkelt en mycket användbar doft. Värd att prova även om man redan har en typisk rökelseträdoft, Incense Oud har sin egen tvist på temat. Enda negativa är att Incense Oud har en, i mitt tycke, för liten projektion.

Julfest

I morgon är det julfest på jobbet. Gäller att tänka sig för redan på morgonen så att jag väljer en doft som sitter långt in på kvällningen. Sedan ska den passa den mörka årstiden. Kandidater so far:
Back to Black (By Kilian): Ren och fin tobaksdoft.
Le Parfum (Lalique): Gourmand oriental med peppar och ros.
Epic (Amouage): Oudbaserad orientalisk dröm. Men jag vill inte göra slut på provet....
Baghari (Piguet): Apelsinblommebaserad, aldehydisk elegans.
I slutändan blir det säkert något helt annat, man kan fundera och planera men sen beror det ändå på känslan för stunden.
