Fragrance of the week (17) 2013 - philosophical thoughts about Opium

This week has been a week in Guerlain, except Tuesday when I wore Yves Saint Laurent Opium Edp in the current version.To me it was a pleasant experience despite all complaints I have read in different blogs and forums. Yes, of course it isn't the same as earlier formulas, compared to my Y2K Opium Edt formula the new Opium is woodier, darker, less spicy-floral and for a short while it has a slight artifical vibe. But most important is that the special Opium style and aura is still there, I don't think it has lost its soul which is what is important to me. It's just an Opium adapted to a new decade, just as much older classics as Guerlain Shalimar and Chanel No 5 have done multiple times. Of course a fragrance could not smell as before as the circumstances are changing over the years and maybe also it should not as it's, at least from a Parfumista viewpoint, interesting to investigate the development of a certain fragrance between different decades and formulas. This exercise is almost as exploring different but similar in style fragrances.

Spring ha finally arrived but the mood for springfragrances has not yet appeared even if I tried with the soooo spring-/summerlike Eau de Ciel by Annick Goutal earlier this week. Overall I still want heavier and darker stuff such as my new lemming Le Parfum Couture Denis Durand for M.Micallef. I'm glad to have, even if late, tested something from the house of M.Micallef. It has not gotten around to testing them earlier, maybe because there is such a large range of perfumes that I havn't know where to start. My first experience is so promising that I'll definitly test more from M.Micallef.

Another just great one which is very suitable for the season even if floriental in style is Saffron Rose from Grossmith. Definitly the best one I have tried from the house so far, but I'll have of course not tried them all.

Fearing the coming regulations and realizing I have not much of  Guerlain Shalimar I just had to order some more this week. Despite reformulated several times during the decades, I like the formulas now avaible and I dare not take the risk not having enough of this classic if it will be deeply affected from the coming regulations.

Springfragrances 2013

The winter has been staying for an exceptional long time this year so the real inspiration of wearing springfragrances has not really appeared. Instead I have been much into fragrances which are suitable year around and  with a renewed appreciation of some of the great classics, particulary the Guerlains. Regardless of this, but of course also with some inspiration from it, here comes a list of fragrances inspiring me this spring:

Rose Splendide (Annick Goutal): The tough, rough and wild pink rose, just as a not trimmed rosebush. Rose Splendide smells as the flowers, leaves and steams are all crushed and extracted into the fragrance.

La Violette (Annick Goutal): This leafy,crispy green perfectly just a bit candided sweet violet is not of the lipsticky-powdery cosmetic styled type. This is the small violet struggeling in the old grass just before the new fresh and green appears.

Violette in Love (Parfums de Nicolaï): Also a non-cosmetic violet, this time supported by citrus, peppery and slight berry notes. In the same style as AG La Violette but different when it comes to the details. Pretty, feminine and chic.

Vie de Chateau (Parfums de Nicolaï): This citrus-topped, hay-ish, slight leathery chypre is the  quintessential of casual chic. Like a stroll on the fields a sunny, day in the late spring/early summer.

I think that Annick Goutal and Parfums de Nicolaï are my ulitmate houses when it comes to springfragrances. Both have several light, sparkling, natural fresh fragrances which are very suitable for spring. And when spring approaches, the craving of fragrances from these houses arises.

As I have been in some sort of Guerlain obsession the latest months there is of course some gems from this house in different facets of blue.

Apres l'Ondee (Guerlain): More iris than violet, some soft spices warms it up a bit but in hte same time there is a moisty cleanness as the smell of earth, grass and fragile springflowers just after a rain.

L'Heure Bleue (Guerlain): After decades of testing, I finally get this more complicated follower to Apres l'Ondee (or have become totally exhausted and have capitulated :-) and also have been almost addicted. I often long for wearing L'Heure Bleue.

Last but not least, the house with the always so wearable, casual chic classics, Hermès.

Amazone (Hermès): My all time favourite fresh flowery fragrance. I have so much appreciated the fresh leaves and bulb- and other crisp flowers of the wild but chic Amazone since we met for the first time twenty years ago. A signature of younger days.

Jour d'Hermès (Hermès): Hermès latest will probably be a floral classic. This green floral is, to my nose, a paler and more polite variation of the extroverted great narcissus, mossy, green Le Temps d'une Fête from (here is the fabulous Patricia again:) Parfums de Nicolaï.

Fragrance(s) of the week(s) (13-14) 2013 - Easterfrags

Easter is somehow a fragrance feast to me. Probably not only because of the scents connected to it from bulbflowers and sweets, as also the sacral connection. Probably the mainreason is that Easter offers two extra holidays and therefore the opportunity to dive deeper in the fragrance hobby :-) than during regular weekends. Different years I'm into different fragrancethemes during the Easter, which theme I think has to do with when Easter occours. Late Easter = the green floral bulb theme is tempting, an early Easter = the gourmand or the incense theme. This year I think the gourmands will win, it is still cold winter and recently I have been drawn to sweet and comforting fragrances. From this gourmand view I think the following will suit well for Easter:

L'Heure de Nuit (Guerlain): The house of Guerlain celebration of the hundred years anniversery of  classic (to say at least) L'Heure Bleue. A contemporary interpretation that captures the classic in a edible way. The classic iris-helitrophe-neroli accord is lands in an almost mashmallow and amaretto like accord.

Tonka Imperiale (Guerlain): Almost too sweet, like a powdery almond cake. Delicious and creates the olfactive image of visiting an elegant confectioners.

White Aoud (Montale): Here the mashmallow note is present again, but combined with oud, saffron and cardamom in a well balanced creamy mix. soft as white angora but in the same time distinctive, it is Montale after all.

Loukhoum (Ava Luxe): Just enough but not too sweet to be a Loukhoum. Powdery notes, almond and honey moistened with rosewater, this is a delicious.

Angel (Thierry Mugler): Last but not least maybe the most obvious choice in this Easter gourmand parade: Angel and sweets :-). The notes of dark chocolate, caramel, fruits, tonka and patchouli is still iconic and sadly, as I have understand it, severely threatened by the coming regulations later this year.

Fragrance(s) of the week (11) 2013

This week I have been terribly cold and just smell fragments of the frags I'm wearing. Beside my Frederic Malle testing activity, my belated Guerlain obsession is growing. I really appreciate to wear (even if they don't suit me perfectly) the classics like Mitsouko and L'Heure Bleue in different strenghts and longing for apring and Apres l'Ondee. Even in the current or almost current versions, this frags are by far more original than most of the niche launched today. And also like several of the current Guerlains, for example Cuir Beluga is caring with its smooth, suedelike texture, which is excellent when having a bad cold. I also have to admit that I like Shalimar Initial with its elegant iris-patchouli accord and Shalimar Initial L'Eau, an interersting bergamot and iris combination, perfect for spring.

To further enhance this Guerlaineuphoria I just have to hang around at Monsieur Guerlains blog drooling over these beauties

Fragrance(s) of the week (3) 2013

This week I had new experiences with two fragrances which until now have been a bit hard for me:

* Old Mitsi - Mitsouko. It seems as after almost ten years of experimenting I finally found the right dosage and right climat conditions etc as Mitsi now seems to fit quite well. Or at least I imagine so, as every true parfumista of course want this classic to fit. As I lunched with Fragrantfanatic that day, I got a professional opinion; the peaches over the moss was the main impression and that Mitsi smelled good.

* Today  (snowy as usual, - 20 C  :-) I percieved Douglas Hannant by Robert Piguet in a quite different way than when worn in the spring and summer. In the warmer months the pearnote takes the centerstage and DH becames fruity-floral in apperance with a touch of detergent. Today it performs as a bright, clearly tubereusedominated, white floral with just a light supporting pearnote and no laundry vibes. Delicious!

Place des Lices – Twenties

Twenties from the Saint Tropez based house Place des Lices is a fragrance that will capture the spirit of the nightlife of the roaring twenties. As an eveninginspired fragrance from that era it’s “of course” an orientalstyled perfume, but a soft oriental contemporary interpreation.

Twenties starts with rounded spices which creates a soft and smooth aura round the wearer. As Twenties continuies in its drydown a slight gourmand note, but not especeially sweet note, appears, probably the honey. The delicious spicy-honey accord is resting over a well balanced ambery-patchouli base.

To me Twenties is not a wild, outrageous perfume for decadant nightlife of the 1920s, in my book such fragrances are for example Habanita by Molinard, Arpége by Lanvin and to some extent also Guerlain Shalimar. To me Twenties is a straight forward, easy to wear, comfortscent, perfect for relaxing with a good book in front of the fireplace. As a soft, non-offensive, oriental, Twenties is also suitable for daytime officewear to lighten up grey, chilly autumn- and winterdays. Sillage is close and longevity good.

Twenties resembles many soft oriental fragrances, it doesn’t stand out but is on the other hand a representative, well-made and quite affordable example of the genre, a good soft oriental basic alternative for the fragrance wardrobe.

Fragrance(s) of the week (1) 2013

Almost every week there is a fragrance or fragrancestyle that I particulary crave. Maybe I wear the fragrance some day that particular week, just sniff it, tray it or just let the longing persist as I'm often totally off-season when it comes to what I crave and the season current. To examplify: The week before Christmas I suddenly started to long after the sparkling, grassy and green springlike Chanel No 19 Edt, this in the middle of the cold and darkest winter, with lot of snowing. The same phenomena, but in the opposite fragrancedirection, is happening in the middle of the summer, some years as early as around Midsummers Eve. Than in the warmth and brightness of the Nordic summer, I start longing for dark and deep fragrances as ambers, dark roses, ouds, patchouli. Another observation when it comes to my perfumecraving during the latest half year is an increasing need and appreciation for the classics as the classic Chanels, Guerlains, Rochas or Diors. When it comes tocontemporary perfumes, I prefer perfumes created in the classic style as the offerings of Puredistance, Parfums de Nicolï and Parfums MDCI or more complicated contemporary perfumes with many dimensions as the perfumes of Ramón Monegal, Amouage or Mona di Orio.

To conclude this philosophising: 1) Fragrancewise I'm often in the reverse season 2) Fragrancestylish the circle is completed, I'm back where it all started, with the classics or  classic styled, well-crafted fragrances.

For 2013 I will start to notice (and post) if there is a/some special weekly cravings. Here are my observations for the first week of January 2013:

- The longing for springfragrances has intensified. Today (chilly and grey outside) I'm wearing  the Guerlain iris/violet/mimosa/guerlinade classic Apres l'Ondee Edt and I'm constantly sniffing my wrists.

- The other perfume that influenced me this week and I really liked to wear at New Years Eve was a perfume that not belongs to any of the categories mentioned above: Miss Dior Le Parfum which IMHO is a well crafted, contemporary mainstream with some dept and body to it. Features that is becoming more and more rare these days,  both within mainstream and niche.

Robert Piguet - Mademoiselle Piguet

Mademoiselle Piguet is another fragrance in the great Nouvelle Collection from Robert Piguet created by the "house nose" Aurelien Guichard.

Mademoiselle Piguet could be described as beeing vegetal, combined with orangeflowers with a sweet honeyed texture. The vegetal note is not damp and almost on the verge to rottening (but in a positive way)as in some interpretations for example Guerlain Jardins de Bagatelle Edp and Annick Goutal Passion, the vegetal note is almost fresh and reminds me of a fresh sugar pea. A similar impression is expressed in a Fragrantica review by clover.chen who refers to processed mung beens in desserts, something that I havn't tasted myself but can image when smelling the greenery of Mademoiselle Piguet. The orangeflower I perceive as very natural and fresh, not chemichal at all. The note has a wonderful honeyed nectar texture and smells just sweet delicious, probably the apricot adds this facet. There is something in the orangeflowernote that reminds me of the same note in Fracas, but in Mademoiselle Piguet it is somehow domesticated.

To me the structure of Mademoiselle Piguet is linear, the notes are preseant at the same time even if the vegetal phase is more apparent in the first part of the dry down of the fragrance and later instead is acting as one of the supporting notes in the background. To me the sweet , honeyed,  Mademoiselle Piguet also seems to be the female counterpart to the (to my nose) much more masculine dry, herbal-orangeblossom NoteS which I reviewed earlier this week, they are fragrances of the opposite side of the interpreation of orangeblossom-scale and are interesting to wear as complementary fragrances for different moods and occasions. As NoteS is more complicated, strict and a excellent choice for daytime professional wear, the Mademoiselle is a fragrance both for evening and comforting daytime wear, versatile enough to warming up during cold winterdays and to bloom beautifully in the summerheat. Mademoiselle Piguet, thanks to the interesting and well harmonised vegetal notes, has its own identity even if partly familiar to other fragrances featuring the orangeblossomnote.The longevity of Mademoiselle Piguet is extraordinary for an orangeblossom scent, I can smell the orangeblossom on my skin more then 30h after application.

I think Mademoiselle Piguet would be appreciated by those who like L’Artisan Seville à l’Aube, Maria Candida Gentile Hanbury and Annick Goutal Tubereuse (even if featuring another white blossom note I think Tubereuse and Mademoiselle Piguet have a similar pleasant, honeyed texture).

Royal happiness

Today is a day of joy and happiness here in Sweden. Our beloved Crown Princess Couple HRH Crownprincess Victoria and HRH Prince Daniel became parents to a little princess, the futhure heir of the throne. I had already put Burberry Body on when Mr Parfumista called and told me that Prince Daniel *)  hade something to announce at 7.00 am. If I had known I would have applied something more royal to celebrate the little Princess but I think Body is quite ok as it reminds me of pink roses in a smooth and fluffy creaminess. This happening made me recapitulate which fragrances I have worn the other special days of this nice couple:

The  engagement day February 24, 2009: Guerlain L'Heure Bleue, if I had known that morning what happy news that would be delivered I would definitly chosen something else. But on the other hand, that was the first time something really happy occured when wearing L'HB, two times when I have worn it (and I don't wear it often) sad things had happen.

The wedding day June 19, 2010: As the event was well-known (to say at least :-) in advance I could prepare for a royal spritz with Montales Highness Rose.

Now we (the royalists at least) are looking forward to the baptism of the little one later this spring. And of course I'm planning to report about this event from the same olfactory perspective :-)

*) The Prince Daniel story is the Cinderella-story of the 2000s: A young energetic man raised in a middle class family in a small municipality, moves to the capital of Sweden, get educated to be a Personal Trainer, starts an exclusive gym, becomes the PT of the Crownprincess, the business grows to a several gyms, the couple have to hide from the press and in the same time try to convince the King about their love and Daniels suitability as the consort to the future queen. After eight years, 2009, they finally got the permission to marry and where engaged. But at that time Daniel was seriously ill as he from his youth had an nonfunctional kidney and the other one was deteriorated. Luckily Daniels father Olle donated a kidney and everything went well. The wedding 2010 was like a fairytale and Daniel became HRH Prince Daniel. Today he is performing very well in this very special role. Almost all (at least the roylistic) women in Sweden loves Prince D as he seems to be the most perfect, caring, secure in himself, natural, polite, chivalrous guy one can image.  

Hassler Roma - Amorvero

Amorvero is created by the italian nose Lorenzo Dante Ferro to catch the aura and the spirit of the posh, five star Hotel Hassler Roma, with traditions back in the nintheen century.

The discrete charm of Amorvero is perfectly catching the spirit of an establishment as Hotel Hassler. Amorvero opens as a classical oriental with bergamot and citrusy notes followed by distinctive ambery- floral elements. Something reminds me of the smell of understated, luxary soap that are present in first class hotels like Hassler. Despite the soapy association Amorvero isn't particulary soapy in it's drydown. The scent is somehow fleeting in it's texture. I'm trying the EDT version and as I understand, the EDP and perfume versions have more body and are more close to the skin. To me Amorvero EDT is a wearable daytime oriental that also can be worn in summerevenings without the risk of become cloying. Perfect for a romantic candellight dinner a warm summerevening in the eternal city.

There is something in the spirit of Amorvero that reminds me of Guerlains Vol de Nuit EDT, in some of the latest, but not the latest, formulation. As VdN is sharper and has more of a aldehydic irisy feeling, Amorvero smells more of ambery-wrapped white flowers and is softer, warmer, rounder and more sweet in it's character. The ackords of white flowers and oriental notes seems to be seamless and the blend is very well rendered. The sample of Amorvero EDT comes from Fragrance & Art

Parfumerie Générale - Bois de Copaiba

"Luktar tant, för starkt ". Herr Parfumista är inte särskilt nådig mot Pierre Guillaumes pudriga, varma oriental Bois de Copaiba. Min väninna är mer diplomatisk, "väldigt pudrig, damig". Men jag kan inte låta bli att tycka om denna klassiska oriental mer än jag borde, eftersom den påminner om andra, redan existerande fina orientaler och florala orientaler. Den känns varm, orange och för tankarna till ett annat århundrade, som på bilden ovan.

BdC inleder med att påminna mig mycket om en fas i Serge Lutens klassiska läderdoft Cuir Mauresques utveckling. Det är det varma, torrt pudrigt lätt apelsinblommigt lite fruktiga, spanskt lädriga inslaget. Det finns också något i BdC som påminner om Jean Patous florala oriental Divine Folie, troligen rör det sig om ett inslag av nejlika. Och så finns där en not av heliotrophe, även om den inte nämns, något som är likt Patricia de Nicolaïs Kiss me tender. Längre fram i doften ger sig sedan gamla hederliga Shalimar till känna, särskilt den bergamottdominerade öppningen i Shalimar finns med som ett stråk i BdC. Den senare delen av BdC känns mer transparent än starten, om man nu kan använda ordet transparant i de här orientaliska sammanhangen, och BdC får ytterligare en dimension. Den här fasen förstärks också pudrigheten av en fin och mjuk sandeltränot.

BdC är en sådan där doft som jag har fastnat för ordentligt trots, eller kanske just för att, den påminner så om flera fina klassiker. Att jag verkligen har fastnat för en doft är tydligt när den pockar på uppmärksamhet och dyker upp i tankarna flera dagar efter att jag provat den. Jag testade den också för ett och ett halvt år sedan men då klickade det inte ordentligt. Eller så segrade förnuftet över känslan. Nu finns stor risk att motsatsen inträffar!

BdC är en varm, kraftfull doft och herr Parfumista har delvis rätt i uttalandet om för stark. Jag tog lite för mycket, det medges. Däremot rätt doserad så är den med sin värme helt perfekt för en lång, kall vinter. Den är också mycket intressant med sina olika faser och det bekanta och igenkännande som doften förmedlar.

 Mr Parfumista first comments of  Bois de Copiba was "this is an old ladys scent" (I hate that expression as I like many of scents in classical aldehydic, chypre or oriental style).  One have to be very careful when applicating BdC, when I tested this at first I spritsed to much. When applicated with lighter hand Mr P suddenly liked BdC. And of course, BdC is very ladylike and something of a contemporary interpretation of the classical, powdery, balmy, resiny oriental genere. Old classics as Shalimar, Divine Folie and also modern interpretations as Cuir Mauresque but also the heliothropeladen Kiss Me Tender comes to my mind. A great blend with an outstanding longevity that doesn't loses interest to the wearer during the drydown. On the contrary in BdC the talanted Pierre Guillaume summerizes the classical oriental genre and there is very inspiring and interesting to meet all this good old friends during the drydown.

Bulgari - Mon Jasmin Noir

Bulgaris Mon Jasmin Noir är någon slags fortsättning på Jasmin Noir som kom för några år sedan, båda komponerade av Sophie Labbé men i fallet Jasmin Noir tillsammans med Carlos Benaim istället för Oliver Cresp som är medkompositör i MJN.

MJN inleds med en vegeterande not, påminnande om en kemisk, lite skarp variant av den i Guerlains Jardins de Bagatelle respektive Annick Goutals Passion. Först slår den vegeterande noten över i något obehgligt shampoaktigt men shampokänslan försvinner när MJN når mellanregistret. Här inträder en mycket lätt pepprighet som är lite rökelseliknande, men det är antagligen cederträet i basen som gör sig gällande. Något lite spritsigt grönt smyger sig också in, kanske en variation på den not av sav som finns i JN. Det finns också en liksom sammetslik, konfektlik söthet i MJN. Jasminen som ska vara doftens huvudnummer är inte den vanliga jasmindoften utan känns som en mycket skalad variant. Som om man tagit ut några av doftmolekylerna och satt samman till en anorektisk jasmin. Så för mig är inte MJN så mycket jasmin och så är fallet även med föregångaren JN som är mer av en doft blommig, grönt, träig oriental medan MJN är mer av en myskigt, gräsig, pepprig, vegeterande, lätt blommig doft med stråk av bättre konfekt. Ett alternativ till denna typ av nedtonad, skalad jasmin är i mitt tycke Parfumerie Generales Drama Nuui. Den är inte lika skarp som JN och MJN och bland annat jasmin, trä och kryddor framkallar en trevlig, lätt theig aura.

Om jag jämför MJN och JN så är den sistnämnda  mitt tycke en mer fullländad och originell doft, dvs att parfymörena tänkt till en del när de skapade formulan. JN känns mer dramatisk och fungerar också som en kvällsdoft medan MJN i mitt tycke mer är en dagdoft då den är mer straight forward och ljusare. På det hela taget är inte MJN så tokig när den torkat ned, även om den, precis som JN ger i från sig en lite skarp not på mig.

Bulgaris Mon Jasmin Noir is a kind of continuation of Jasmin Noir, which was released from the same house a few years ago. To me all together, the sappy-green with it's contrasting dark, woody vanilla Jasmin Noir is the more interesting of the two. Mon Jasmin Noir on the other hand is lighter and has an interesting vegetal feeling, there are notes that reminds me of classical floral fragrances with vegetal layers as Guerlains Jardins de Bagatelle and Annick Goutals Passion with Mon Jasmin Noir as an 2010's interpretation of the theme. There is also peppery and some schampoo-like notes in the top. Traces of powdery candy notes appears as Mon Jasmin Noir dries down, probably the nougat mentioned among the notes. Jasmine is very light handed in both Jasmin Noir and Mon Jasmin Noir, a similar treat as in Parfumerie Generales Drama Nuui . The latter is smoother and more spicy to me where as the to Bulgaris are projected sharper on my skin. Mon Jasmin Noir is more easy going, an office scent, than Jasmin Noir which is more of an evening fragrance. Of the two I would choose Jasmin Noir but I would be happy to wear Mon Jasmin Noir if somebody gifted med with a bottle.

Guerlain – Shalimar Initial

Shalimar Initial är ytterligare en Shalimar-flanker skapad av Guerlains nuvarande husnäsa Thierry Wasser. Tanken är att det ska vara en Shalimar för yngre bärare, kanske en inkörsport till originalet. Jag tvivlar i och för sig på att de som växer upp i dagens olifactoriska omgivning och som inte är särskilt parfymintresseade, kommer att hitta till och okritiskt utvärdera originalet. Shalimar Initial har fått mycket ris, beskylld för att vara helt obalanserad, men också lite ros, men det är förstås extra känsligt när man ger sig på ikoner som Shalimar. Och jag tycker att det behöver vara fel, i alla fall inte i de fall där man kan känna igen den ursprungliga doften som i det här fallet och i exempelvis Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere.

Shalimar Initial inleds med en riktigt, ”nichig” tydlig morotsnot dvs en aspekt av irisroten. Moroten skymtar dock snabbt förbi och följs av delar av det typiska Shalimar-ackordet om en nedtonat och utan ullsockan och den pudriga, ambrerande kådigheten. Ersättningen är en skalad patchoulli i diskret myskkombination. Irisen finns i en mer diskret variant som mer för tankarna till själva blomman än den underjordiska noten i starten. I denna fas skiftar Initial fram och tillbaka under stor del av dagen även om patchoullin successivt blir alltmer dominerande. Shalimar Initial slutar i en Angel-light version men utan det gourmandiga, mörkt fruktiga inslag som finns i Angel. Patchoullin är modern, liksom torr och diskret, en kontsgjord, strippad patchoullinot, på ett positivt sett.

Shalimar Initial är en elegant och bärbar doft som faktiskt är ganska intressant att följa i dess utveckling. Jag är i och för sig ingen expert på balans i dofter men jag ser inget dysfunktionellt hos Initial. Att doften ska vara inriktad på en yngre publik kanske är tanken men i mitt tycke är den ålderslös. Nästan i alla fall, den kanske inte riktigt är vad man förknippar med en tonåring, om jag ska vara fördomsfull.

Jag tycker att Shalimar och Shalimar Initial kompletterar varandra. Den förra är varm, komplex och krävande (retro), den andra är mer kylig, strikt och skalad (modern). Det finns alltså all anledning för Shalimar fantasten att ha båda i sin kollektion.

Parfums de Nicolaï - Number One

Number One är den första damdoften från Parfums de Nicolaï. Den introducerades vid husets öppnande 1989 och Patrica de Nicolaï tilldelades ett av parfymörskråets främsta priser för den välgjorda kompositionen. Number One är en vit bukett med jasmin, neroli och tuberose. Men det finns också iris, ros, svarta vinbär och tycker jag en lätt vanilj samt vit mysk i basen.

Trots att N O är en vit blomdoft och en åttiotalsdoft så är den inte stor och fyller rummet. Tvärtom så är den mycket diskret och känns naturlig. På mig sitter den inte särskilt länge på huden men det som hamnar på tyg doftar elegant och välbalanserat länge. Tuberosen tar aldrig över i N O och den kan beskrivas som en torr, skalad variant som interagerar med den andra blommorna i en harmoni som gör det svårt att plocka ut enskilda noter.

N O är inte någon uppseendeväckande eller särskilt rolig doft. Däremot diskret, elegant, stramt naturlig som passar dagtid på kontoret. Den är en årstidslös doft och bra att bära i transformeringen mellan olika årstider.N O är i samma genre som Guerlains Jardins de Bagatelle men till skillnad från denna en väluppfostrad och återhållen doft.

Guerlain - Jardins de Bagatelle

Guerlains vita blombukett Jardins de Bagatelle skapad av Jean-Paul Guerlain 1983 är en doft som förbryllar mig. Den dofter olika varje gång jag använder den. Särskilt stor är skillnaden mellan sommar och vinter. Den gör sig bättre i kallt väder, den är då mer sammanhållen och blommig än på sommaren.

JdB är en vit blombukett men med andra, mörkare nyanser som lurar i undervegitationen. För det är just det, under det vita finns spår av just undervegitation där också grönska och ruttande blommer finns. Så doften kan sägas pendla mellan de vita, utslagna blommorna och det vissnande och ruttnande. Ibland känns även en liköraktig not. Tuberosen är en av många blommor i denna välkomponerade, fascinerade doft. Den slår inte igenom och dominerar utan harmonierar med övriga blommor. JdB har en imponerande ingredienslista med aldehyder, viol, bergamott, citron, jasmin, magnolia, tuberose, apelsinblomma, gardenia, orkidé, liljekonvalj, ylang-ylang, påsklilja, ros, neroli, patchoulli, mysk, vetiver och cederträ. Nästan hela parfymörens blompalett alltså.

Även om JdB inte tillhör mina största favoriter så är det en utmanande doft som jag inte riktigt vet vad som ska hända med när jag använder den. Och det är precis sådana utmaningar jag uppskattar med parfymer.

Mitsouko (Guerlain) Hur mycket jag än vill passa i denna persiko-trä-chypre så funkar den inte. Men alla andra Parfumistor verkar den passa på …

Shocking (Schirapielli) Luktar kryddig ros på flaskan men enligt herr Parfumista doftar den på mig damträff på Svalnäs.

L’Air du Temps (Ricci) Får mig att känna mig som den framlidna brittiska drottningmodern- wanna-bee.

Oscar (de la Renta) Passade (?) för tjugofem år sedan men luktar i dag som om (återigen enligt herr P) farmor stigit in i bilen.

L’Heure Bleue (Guerlain) Vem vill inte passa i den blå timmens melankoliska doft? Så fin på flaskan men blir tant applicerad på mig.

Chanel No 5 (Chanel) Tyvärr, tyvärr, på mig luktar denna klassikernas klassiker parfymbutik. Den blir liksom bara en doft.

Rose Absolute (Goutal) Denna rena rosendoft slutar tyvärr bara i ett potpurri på mig.

Vilka är dina klassiska besvikelser?

Kommentar 2011: Har gjort mig av med de flesta av dessa prover eller om det fanns en flaska. Den enda som jag fortfarande kämpar med är Mitsouko, någon enstaka gång har den som helhet blivt bra på mig. Vanligen doftar toppnoterna bra men sedan....Chanel No 5 har jag närmat mig igen och nu passar den riktigt bra även om  Eau Premiere passar bättre...L'Heure Bleue finns förstås kvar som referensrör men jag försöker inte ens testa den mer.

Hitta pärlorna

Som jag tidigare skrivit om så tar det i regel ett par år innan pärlorna i en årgång sållats fram. Att de fortfarande finns kvar på marknaden trots det massiva, ständigt ökande utbudet visar på dofternas kvalitet eller åtminstone på en personlighet/originalitet. Dessutom har priserna ofta sjunkit jämfört med nyheterna. I en normal parfymaffärs standardsortiment kan man hitta många bra parfymer som kommer att bli eller redan är klassiker. Här några som passar för den mörka årstiden:

Prada (Prada): Elegant patchoulli, trä och tonkaböna baserad doft som gjord för att matcha kashmirtröjan eller pälsen. Skapad av Carlos Benaïm och Max Gavvary 2004.

Angel (Mugler): Denna patchoullibomb med mörk choklad och mörka, övermogna frukter var banbrytande när den kom 1992. Hatad av många men älskad av fler. Skapad av Olivier Cresp och Yves Chiris.

Coco: (Chanel): Kryddig oriental, inspirerad av barockens överdåd. Skapad av Chanels mångåriga husnäsa Jaques Polge 1984.

Hypnotic Poison (Dior): Träig vaniljbas med kardemumma, mandel, dov jasmin och mossa. Skapad av Annick Menardo 1998.

Jasmin Noir (Bulgari): Denna fina gröna, träiga jasmindoft som kom ut så sent som 2008 är en säker framtida klassiker. I mitt tycke en av årets absoluta topplanseringar. Skapad av Carlos Benaïm och Sophie Labbe.

Vilka exempel på bra, lättåtkomliga, ”vinterdofter” har du?

Vintern 2011: Håller fortfarande med men vill lägga till ett par till som: Dior Addict (mmm), Chanel Allure Sensuelle, Paco Rabanne Lady Million och gamla trotjänaren Guerlain Shalimar förstås.

Kort om - Insolence EDP (Guerlain)

På tal om viol: Insolence EDP är toppen en kyliga dagar. Ger mig associationer av:

*Kanderade violer och violtabletter.
*Mörkt violfärgad sammet.
*En stor, mörk ametist.

Insolence är ytterligare ett exempel på vilka fina dofter det finns i det "ordinarie" sortimentet. En doft som har sitt eget signum, hade lika gärna kunnat ges ut som nichedoft.

Vero Profumo - Onda Extrait respektive EDP

Vero Kerns Onda i Extrait (parfym) har jag reviewat för snart två år sedan på den gamla DV-bloggen. Under 2010 släppte Vero Kern sina dofter även i EDP form och därmed (såsom det brukar vara med bra parfymhus) en till viss del annorlunda ingrediensuppsättning än i den ursprungliga parfymen. Onda är i mitt tycke ganska olik i parfymform jämfört med EDP form.
Onda Extrait: Parfymen är animalisk och nästan frånstötande i starten. Sedan lugnar den ned sig i en mellanmjukt lädrig, jordig, lite vått hö-liknande och tovad ullsocka doft. Den känns väldigt vintage, den tovade ullsocke-noten känner jag igen från Guerlains Shalimar. Men Onda är en torrt träig, mörk grön doft, inte en oriental ska poängteras. I basen lite läder, lätt vetiver och en liten dos av den typiska plåterdoften som finns i en tidigare EDT-formulering av Musst de Cartier som jag hade under tidigt nittotal. Härligt kärv, som marken en mycket tidig vårdag.

Onda EDP: I EDP-form är Onda sötare och inleder med en mycket fin och originell passionfruktsnot. Jag riktigt ser den lilla skrumpna gråbruna passionsfrukten med dess frön och orange-gröna innandöme och känner den typiska syrligheten. Det är också framförallt toppnnoterna som förändrats mellan formuleringarna. EDP:n har kvar mycket av den lättare, gladare passionsfruktsnoten även i hjärtat och när doften "torkat ned" till basen så finns där en frisk vetiver och något som liknar geranium.

Onda håller lätt hela dagen på mig i båda de aktuella formuleringarna. Ingen av dem är vad man rakt av säger luktar gott utan det är ganska krävande dofter som gör att näsan hela tiden dras till handlederna för att finna ut vad som nu hänt i doften.

Problemet är att det egentligen är motiverat att ha båda dofterna om man tycker om Ondas mycket speciella stil. Jag tror att det går att hamna i en evighetscirkel av beslutsvånda om man ska köpa en flaska av en av dem, vilket gör att man riskerar att aldrig komma tll skott. Den mer ekonomiskt lagda väljer förstås den passionsfrukt influerade EDP:n men risken är då att man efter ett tag saknar den animaliska lortigheten i parfymen. Parfymen är trots allt ett halv-snäpp mer excentrisk än EDP:n.

I nästa inlägg kommer min snart två år gamla review av Onda i extrait form. Jag hade inte läst den innan jag gjorde det här inlägget men när jag läser den i efterhand är det intresant att se att så stor del av intrycken är ungefär likartade.
