Jul et Mad - Aqua Sextius

Inspired from Aix-en-Provence with its sparkling fountains, the latin name of the city gave name to Aqua Sextius, the founders of perfumehouse Jul et Mad, hired the it-perfumer Cecile Zarkoian to create a fitting blend.

Aqua Sextius starts with a concentrated limenote which reminds me of the classic Rose's limejuice. Soon an aquatic accord somewhere in between Aqua di Gio and Agua de Loewe joins  the lime together with a fresh, green, minty note. Even if not mentioned as a single note, I percieve something close to a soft cardamonnote mingling with the mint through the whole developement of the fragrance. A sort of clean and dry figgy note also appears in the middlenotes together with a slight flowery element. Some fresh, soft, woody notes together with a pleasant, clean musk anchors Aqua Sextius and the notes blends in a comforting and relaxing way.

Aqua Sextius is a perfect fragrance for relaxed casual wear but also easy to wear and not disturbing in the workplace despite its good sillage. The longevity is very good, for over a day even in warm, sunny, summertempratures. The style of Aqua Sextius is appropriate for summer but I also think it's a fragrance which is comfortable to wear in any season. A happy and easy to wear fragrance within the "mainstream niche"cathegory.

Those who like fresh fragrances in the style of  Parfumerie Generale Yuzu ab Iratio, Phaedon Cendres de The and Noir Marine will probably also appreciate Aqua Sextius. The fragrances doesn't smell the same but have common accords as for example the fresh cardamom smell in Cendres, the aquatic wood of Noir and the dry but juicy texture of Yuzu.

Parfumerie Générale - Grand Siècle Intense 7.1

Picture: Grand Siècle Intense
Photo: PR Parfumerie Générale (c)
Grand Siècle Intense 7.1 is the just released, fourth fragrance in the Signature Collection of Parfumerie Générale, collection which Pierre Guillaume started to create 2012 to mark the 10th anniversary of Parfumerie Générale that year. The collection will capture Pierres development as a perfumer and offers different interpretations of some of the Parfumerie Générale perfumes from the past. The Signature Collection is only avaible at Parfumerie Générales own website.

Grand Siècle Intense is a follower to the very natural smelling bitter citrus cologne Cologne Grand Siècle in which Pierre Guillaume was inspired by the court of the Sun King Louis XIV in the seventeenth century and the few and pure ingredients which then was avaible to the parfumer.

Grand Siècle Intense starts with natural smelling bitter citrus and green notes. A realistic and refreshing, slight fizzy note of mint leaves appears after a while. This mint is also present in the original Maroocan Mint tea inspired Harmatan Noir 11, but in this fragrance, blended with smokey, spicy almost metallic notes. The minty note is also present in the easier to wear Noir Marine from the Phaedon line. Grand Siècle Intense goes on with green-woody notes, with the sparkilng green of cypress over light woods, fresh moss and a well intergrated vetiver. The cypress slightly reminds me of the sparkling green in Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien. A slight smokey touch also appears and glimpses of a very fine leather also appears and in the basenotes there is also a light, well rounded sweetness, probably the honey, which prevent the fragrance from beeing too aromatic in style.Just as in Cologne Grand Siècle there are no harsh or artifical smelling notes which seems to be quite common in cheaper aromatic/citrus fragrances. As usual with Parfumerie Générale this is high quality stuff and it's a smooth, delightful and easy to wear fragrance. Grand Siècle Intense is, just as it's forerunner, with its close sillage, perfect both for casual and office wear in spring and summer. The only drawback, just as with the cologneversion, is the longevity. Even if I applied liberally, I have to reapply every two-three hours and 75% of my 2 ml sample was gone after one wearing. On the other hand, I have dry skin so this is probably not a common problem.

Comparing the two Grand Siècle versions, Cologne Grand Siècle is more of a cologne in style (even if not fully) with citrusy, lemony notes and also with a for the fragrance characteristic note of a hard citruspastille. In  Grand Siècle Intense the cologne inspired theme is most present in the early stage of the fragrance, later it's more of a citiric, green, light woody aromatic perfume. Both fragrances are unisex even if the cologne IMO is leaning a bit more to the masculine side and the Intense is just neutral.

Rating: 4 (if rating how it smells, its structure and quality of ingredients), 3 (if taken the longevity issues in consideration)

Notes: Bergamot, bitter orange, lemon leaves, mint, cypress, vetiver, patchouli, oakmoss, tobacco absolute, hay, honey

Parfumerie Générale - Indochine

Bild: Indochine, map from 1886,

Parfumerie Générales latest realease in the numbered basic collection of the house is number 25 Indochine. The woody spicy Indochine is, as all the perfumes of the house, created by it's founder Pierre Guillaume. The perfume is inspired of the "good" old days of France with the Asian colonies in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam - Indochine.

Indochine starts exciting with peppery and woody notes, the woody notes feels muted, as grunded to a paste. Maybe there is the thanka wood, don't know how it smells like. As Indochine dries down there is also a dry and dusty feeling and I can also smell a honey note combined with the smell of nectar from a flower. In the middle suddenly the peppar pops up again, this time very true to the smell of fresh grounded peppercorns. In the middle/basenotes section there are woody notes similar to the ones in Pierre Guillaumes Noir Marine and Dzhari for Phaedon. When Indochine first reaches the basenotes I almost think I wear Noir Marine. Maybe this woody-minty-herbal note is the new signum of Pierre Guillaumes creations. But after a while the basenotes of Indochine suddenly are boosted up and I can smell another familiar note: That special sweet, woody almost Chanel Allure like note from PG:s Tonkamande.

Indochine is a very wearable perfume for autumn and winter but also for chilly, rainy summerdays as it's not att all heavy or dense. Suits both in the office and for casual occasions.

I had high expectations of Indochine but even if it is a fine and wellcrafted fragrance, it doesn't exhilarate me.
The topnotes is the most exiting part of Indochine, the fresh peppery notes in the middle is the most spectacular stage. The basenotes, that are similar to Noir Marine and Tonkamande, is weaker in Indochine and closer to the skin. All considerations together i perfer Noir Marine, Dzhari (even if Dzhari only have the woody notes in common with Indochine) and Tonkamande over Indochine. Maybe I had thought the opposite if I had tried Indochine before Noir Marine, Dzhari and Tonkamande, who knows. Indochine smells like a compromise to me. I have reveived a sample of Indochine from Fragance & Art .

Phaedon

Image: Bottles and candle from Phaedon (c)

Phaedon is a new line of perfumes where at least some of the scents are created by Pierre Guillaume. According to the buzz on Basenotes, Noir Marine and Dzhari are the two creations by Pierre. Those that are not created by him, is developed under his supervision. I have recived three samples of the Phaedon perfumes from the niche perfumeshop Fragrance & Art  . Here are my first impressions:

Noir Marine: This is a wearable, stripped, stright forward version of Harmatan Noir No 11 in the Perfume Generale line. Harmatan Noir is more complex but also harder to wear with a teanote that I perceive as metallic-bloody. Noir Marine is also dominated by the minty teanote in Harmatan Noir but it's a brighter and cleaner interpretaton. More aromatic-marine in it's tonality than Harmtan that is more woody- herbal. Personally I prefer the Noir Marine over Harmatan Noir. Notes of mint, tobacco and resins.

Dzhari: This is a beautiful blend with mint (again), sweet wine with some spice and dusty notes. The minty note is smoother compared to Noir Marine but connects the perfumes in the same theme. Dzhari really smells as I perceive ancient. It justifies the inspiration of the line from Sokrates and his disciple Phaedon. To my nose there are some similarities with Midnight Sun from Aqaba, a line inspired of the ancient times of the Queen of Sheba.

Cendres de The: A clean cardamom dominated scent with some sparkling peppernotes in the background. Reminds med the cardamom in Hermès Un Jardin Après la Mousson but Centres de Thè stays true to the cardamom during it´s whole drydown. I don’t feel the tea note but as spiced tea is one of the ingredients it’s probably so well blended that the note it self don’t stand out. Centres de Thè is the best cardamom scent that I have sniffed until now.

From the samples I have tried from the Phaedon Line, my overall impression is that it is a well crafted line in the spirit of Pierre Guillaume and with some characteristics from the PG line. But the Phaedons I have tried are in general more stripped versions, focusing on a few notes, and are easier to wear for a wider audience. To me the scents is smooth and relaxing and at least Noir Marine and Dzhari makes me think of the ancient times that the line gets some of it’s inspiration from. The Phaedons are comfortable and enchanting fragrances according to my nose.
