Coquillete - Tudor

Tudor is said to be the last installment in the fragrance journey of french nichehouse Coquillete. There is no perfumer mentioned for Tudor.

Tudor starts with a pink, velvet rose carried by a fully ripe lemon, which create a fresh, fruity but not too sweet vibe of the fragrance. There are absolutely no harsh or sharp edges either from the lemon or from the rose. The rose smell  is the fresh petals, without the green leaves, steam and thorns.  One can imagine a noble lady relaxing a sunny, early summer day outside a heavy medival castle relieved that the "cousins war" or as we call it today, the war of roses was finally over.

As Tudor reach the middle, the rose and other notes mingles in a beautiful, creamy texture, smelling almost like the smooth rose-nailcream  (don't remember its name)   which my mother used decades ago and also told me that  her grandmother used. Going further in the drydown, Tudor suddenly becomes slight spicy and the pink velvet darkens. There are also earthy qualities apperaing, just as the moisty loam of the forestfloor  heated up by the warm sun contrasting the early summerlight and delicate green of the grass, bushes and  threes. In the basenotes Tudor continues in the light spicy, creamy style and also gets deeper and more balsamic in texture. There is a touch of amber added with light vanilla notes that together with the rest, creates a strange sort of  dark putty lipstick-accord, almost touching a smooth, dark leathery element. In this part there is someting (the dark lipstick) that reminds me of a pale version of the beautiful Rozy Edp from Vero Kern, part of the basenotes of that fragrance seems to be present also in Tudor. There is also a dark, slight herbal, medical note contrasting in the base, in this fragrance darker and ticker than in the archetype of medical roses, Parfume d'Empire Eau Suave. In the overoll context of the basenotes there is also something that reminds me of a feminie interpreatation of Frapin Nevermore, which I experience as a masculine rose. Tudor is, just like Nevermore, classified as unisex but to me it's much more feminine in style, for those who cares of genderclassifications. The longer Tudor dries down in the base the more sweet (like a deep dark frutiy retro candy note) but also, unfortunately, also indistinct and plain it becomes. The top-, middle- and early basenotes is the best and interesting parts of Tudor, in the second part of the basenotes nothing happens.

Taken as a whole, Tudor despite its shortcoming (compared to the earlier stages) in the late dry down, is an intriguing rose fragrance, developing from a innocent, creamy, pink and sunny rose to a darker variation with some not so innocent nuances. The fragrance  may actually serve as an olfactory portrait of the first Tudor queen, Elisabeth the Princess of York (the White rose) married to the Tudor (Lancaster the red rose) Henry, who bacame king Henry VII as the outcome of the civilwar and both parents to Henry VIII. Without any sharp edges and with its sort of retro sweetness, Tudor smells timeless and sort of mysterious natural, like a recipe of a brew  preserved since the days of the Tudors.

Tudor is suitable to wear year around, for any (non-sport) occasions. Sillage is medium and longevity for a day. This intriguing and timeless perfume also causing compliments to the wearer.

Rating: 3

Re rating 2018/2019: 4 + - this is a comfortable and easy to wear rose for everyday. It doesn't become boring, it has enough interesting twists. A rose suitable for fall and winter.

Notes: Rose, geranium, lily of the valley, amber, benzoin, soil, rosewood, labdanum, benzoin, grey amber, vanilla

Olivier Durbano - Pink Quartz

PictureAn elephant carved in rose quartz

Pink Quartz from Olivier Durbano Parfums de Pierre Poemes dedicated to semiprecious stones starts pink/grey velvety rosy paired with a sort of dry, opaque stoney note. In the topnotes, Pink Quartz is uplifting and a bit sparkling and the rose is very natural smelling and true to the real rose scent. When the fragrance dries down, a small trace of incense, spice, balsamic and musky notes deepens and darkens the unconventional rose/stone combo. This combo is the core of the fragrance and apperant in all stages of the dry down. In the basenotes there is also a tangy, slight fizzy note which I so appreciate in rosefragrances and which gives them a touch of chypre. There is also a subtle smoky nuance in the base and a very light sweetness from the resins. If Pink Quartz had a color it's definitly the almost opaque, pale pink/grey of the pink quartz mineral. If it was a fabric, it would be a pale, powdery, pink quartz colored velvet.

Pink Quartz is very intriguing, probably (as the notelist indicate) all the wellbalanced ingredients creates this impression. Pink Quartz is a true unisexfragrance and IMO it lending to the masculine side, here is a rose (without oud) for men. Despite this, it's pleasant also for a woman to wear, an  exception when it comes to pink roses as it is not as sweet as most pink fragrances.. Sillage is close and longevity for 12h+, an exellent choice for the early spring.

Pink Quartz could be appreciated by those who likes pink roses with some deept and without the conventional sweetness fragrances such as Parfum d'Empire Eau Suave even if that one is a tad fruity. To me pink Quartz is sort of the masculine counterpart of Eau Suave. Just as the latter (on of my alltime favorite pink roses) Pink Quartz is a little gem.

Parfum d’Empires - Azemour Les Orangers

Picture: Azemmour, 1572,

Since I rediscovered Parfum d'Empires this summer by trying some old samples I found, I have egarly expected their first launch in two whole years, the orange blossom chypre Azemour Les Orangers. As I realy love Pd'E:s antiseptic smelling, pink rose chypre Eau Suave I had very high expectations of Azemour. And the expectations where fulfilled. Azemour is a worthy continaution of Eau Suave, even if it's a much more diverse composition than I thought before testing.

Azemour is inspired of the city of Azemmour, one of the oldest cities in the Kingdom of Marocco. Here the parfumer of Parfume d'Empires Marc-Antonio Cortichahiato has lived with his family. Azemour starts with beautiful citrus-, orange and some spicy notes, then it becomes greener with galbanum and green leaves. There are also a dry, grassy feeling, probably the hay note and in the basenotes there is a hint of mossiness. I don't know how henna smells but there is a peculiar spicy note that comes and goes during the dry down of the perfume. Maybe this is the henna. Azemour smells as the linen of a first class hotel in Côte d'Azur. It also smells as a luxary soap from the same hotel, but the perfume is oddly enough not soapy, it's more dry in it's texture. Despite the association to linen and soap there is no synthetic, laudery feeling of Azemour, the whole composition smells true and somehow natural. The composition is well balanced ande the sillage is medium. Azemour has a retro feeling and reminds me in it's distinct, elegant, casual style of classical citrus chypres such as Eau de Rocas pour Femme. It's the perfect scent for summer and it lasts well during a whole day, in fall anyway.

The only dissapointment with Azemour Les Oranges is that it reminds me very much of another scent in the same style: Parfumerie Generales beautiful Papyrus de Ciane. To generalize, Azemour to my nose is Papyrus de Ciane infused with orangeblossom/neroli and some spices added. It's a floral, brighter, warmer, sunnier and more feminine version of Papyrus de Ciane. Azemour is also less soapy and mossy than it's possible source of inspiration.

Even if I think Azemour is almost too close to Papyrus de Ciane I rate it highly as I'm really enjoy Papyrus de Ciane and Azemour is a beautiful variation on the same theme.

Negligerat parfymhus

Foto: Herr Parfumista (c)

Parfum d’Empires - Eau Suave
